Rick,
Just checking before I touch the Bios. Since I am putting this hd(2,me) temporarily into pc(1) to extract info, and after that I am going to put back the original hd (1,98se) back into this pc(1), I should be able to use the pc(1,98se) without any problems, just like to have a word of comfort.TIA "Rick T" wrote: Decide what mouse you want to use and plug it in. Boot into the BIOS - check for mouse-related items - set "reset configuration data" to Yes - set "PnP OS" to No - Save and Exit Boot into SafeMode - check DM and toss anything that has a "?" or "x" - if you have drivers for whatever mouse, install. Boot into Normal mode. You should have a mouse by this point but just in case... Ctrl-Alt-Esc opens the StartMenu; arrow and tab keys should enable you to Navigate through ControlPanel etc. without leaving the comfort of your keyboard Rick |

Sorry if I have not used the correct terminology. The 'no mouse icon' refers
to the icon in the DM tree So using serial mouse, ((A)) start in "safe mode" -in the processs of loading, see the cursor 'spinning/changing the shapes' Add/remove: there is no mouse related program DM-there is no Mouse icon (repeat NO Mouse icon) At this point the cursor works like a charm, can go anywhere Words, etc Other device ? -leave it alone (PCI multimedia audio etc) Next shut down and reboot under Normal ((B)) OBSERVATIONS- usually you see the cursor when boot up but I dont see it - no cursor at all - did not say found new hardware, ask for drivers etc Next shut down and reboot under 'safe mode' - same as ((A)). There is no mouse icon in the DM tree and the cursor works like a charm. From my very first post, there was the mouse icon in the DM tree and I delete the sub folders(drivers) and should I by mistake deleted the mouse icon, it should rebuilt itself upon reboot isn't it? fyi, manage to extract most of the info. Twins2, I've just done a search of the MS Knowledge Base and found the
following article which pretty much re-iterates my suggestion and points the problem at the mouse drivers :- "The PS/2 Mouse May Not Work After You Upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition" http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290342 But take particular note of the last paragraph "MORE INFORMATION" - which certainly applies in your case - and did give me cause for concern in my earlier replies I am rapidly running out of ideas except to suggest that you *may* have to run through the whole procedure *several times* - switching between the Serial and then the PS/2 mouse - before you can get the mouse to be correctly recognised. (See the section "If the preceding steps do not resolve this behavior") So at least MS do acknowledge that there is an issue. Keep trying (several times if necessary) and let us know how you get on. At this point, I don't have any further suggestions. Good luck Mart "twins2" wrote in message ... Sorry if I have not used the correct terminology. Mart,
Thanks v much and will try later as suggested, together with Rick T earlier suggestion. However, just to let you know that I attached back the original hd (98se) back into its pc(1) and boot up in safe mode, still using serial mouse. In the DM, there is the mouse tree but listed as ps2, HID compliant mouse etc. So I deleted all entries Reboot in Normal, pc hang. Reboot in 'safe mode and do a Registry Checker, System File Checker - all ok. Reboot in Normal, the cursor works BUT in DM, there is no mouse tree. I do not know what will be the consequences as I use it but its critical that pc(1) works without any problem, owise all hell break lose. Many thanks to all. "Mart" wrote: Twins2, I've just done a search of the MS Knowledge Base and found the following article which pretty much re-iterates my suggestion and points the problem at the mouse drivers :- "The PS/2 Mouse May Not Work After You Upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition" http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290342 But take particular note of the last paragraph "MORE INFORMATION" - which certainly applies in your case - and did give me cause for concern in my earlier replies I am rapidly running out of ideas except to suggest that you *may* have to run through the whole procedure *several times* - switching between the Serial and then the PS/2 mouse - before you can get the mouse to be correctly recognised. The 'no mouse icon' refers to the icon in the DM tree So using serial mouse, ((A)) start in "safe mode" -in the processs of loading, see the cursor 'spinning/changing the shapes' Add/remove: there is no mouse related program DM-there is no Mouse icon (repeat NO Mouse icon) At this point the cursor works like a charm, can go anywhere Words, etc Other device ? However, still wud like to find out why it does not work under Normal mode. TIA "Mart" wrote: Twins2 wrote :- Then I boot up again under 'safe mode' , ya, the mouse works but there is no mouse icon. What 'mouse icon'? Do you mean the one on the System Tray (near the clock at the bottom of the screen)? If so, it SHOULD NOT BE THERE in Safe Mode - And, more importantly, if it there in Normal Mode, (particularly as there is no mouse cursor) you've (somehow) still got a (corrupted?) mouse driver installed. OK - Let's try again! Using the serial mouse (with L/R click only), boot into Safe Mode. First confirm that you haven't got any mouse related software utilities installed - Look in Control Panel \ Add/Remove Programs. If you have, remove them (it). Then (Still in SAFE MODE) navigate to DevMan and locate any/all mouse/pointing devices. Right-click on each in turn and select the "Remove" option. (You do not need to physically disconnect the mouse!). BUT you MUST "Remove" each and every instance of a mouse. N.B. if you lose control of your mouse at this point, use Rick T's suggestion :- "You should have a mouse by this point but just in case... Ctrl-Alt-Esc opens the StartMenu; arrow and tab keys should enable you to Navigate through ControlPanel etc. without leaving the comfort of your keyboard" Thanks Rick ;-) BTW - There is a question mark under the tree is PCI multimedia .../PCI network controller/Real magic pro. (this is under the 'safe mode'..) You are probably best leaving this alone, if you intend putting the disk back in the other PC. It's just another ingredient in the registry "soup" caused by swapping the disk between PC's, as it's likely to be a piece of hardware on the original machine. Now shut your computer down. Re-boot and let WinMe boot into Normal Mode and WATCH THE SCREEN CAREFULLY! Does it say that a New Device has been detected, and then continues to try to install a Serial Mouse? Does it ask for Drivers, or offer - or try - to install a Mouse Driver. If so, let WinMe install its best choice (probably a Generic MS serial mouse driver). Let it continue to completion. Mmm... HID compliant mouse too! - That's USB
You certainly seem to have had a mixture of mouse drivers at one time or another on your machines - Mouse Soup! g "This behavior may also occur if you transfer a hard disk (that has Windows Me installed) from one computer to another computer."
