Default No Icons - No Taskbar

After upgarding are old '98 SE machine to Windows ME and
installing a wireless network card - all worked great
UNTIL later in the day I Shutdown and Restarted

Start-up brought to "Windows Networking" password screen -
tried everything from nothing to every password we've
ever used - same result = a blank desktop - no taskbar +
no icons.
I've rebooted in Safe Mode + tried the "Windows ME"
Startup disc - Setup mode - everything takes me to a
blank desktop without a Taskbar or Icons
I would uninstall but cannot get to the C:, any ideas?

Boot with the Startup Disk. Edit C:\Windows\System.ini changing
shell=explorer.exe to shell=msconfig.exe. Save and reboot. When msconfig
opens - if it does - select Diagnostic Startup. See if that yields any
information, like what is failing to load.

Then it can't be booting from the Startup Disk. Probably you need to change
the boot order in the BIOS. To get into the BIOS probably requires hitting
the Del key repeatedly after the computer is turned on (after the memory
count, if you can actually see it). If Del doesn't work and you don't get a
message (probably in the bottom left corner after the computer starts)
about which key to hit to enter the BIOS, post back the make and model of
the computer.

Once in the BIOS, remembering not to alter anything else, change the boot
order so that Floppy or FDD is *1st Boot Device*. If the option is not in
the main BIOS menu, go through the sub-menus until you find it. The keys to
use to make selections and navigate should be clearly indicated.

When you have the floppy (FDD) drive selected as 1st Boot Device, save and
exit.

You should try=20

A registry repair:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\ prompt type

C: (press enter)

Now type:

cd windows\command (press enter)

Your prompt should read C:\Windows\Command, correct?

Now type:

scanreg /fix (space between g and /)

Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If that doesn't work, try a registry resto

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\ prompt and repeat the =
steps above and replace the scanreg command with:

scanreg /restore (space between g and /)

Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for =
the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If you don't have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com.

Any luck?

Zee
