Default Bad Sectors

When I rebooted my laptop the other day, it indicated that there were some
bad sectors found and that I should run Scandisk. Once the scandisk was
completed, it than began a surface scan. (I just replaced the hard drive one
month ago with an IBM Travelstar 6.0) The surface scan was agonizingly slow.
It would find a bad sector and ask if I wanted to "Fix It", which I did.
After approximately 9 hours it had only completed 50% of the scan - 1,500,000
sectors, completed scanning 800,000 and found 60 bad sectors. While
attempting to move the laptop to another room, I unplugged the power source
and the computer froze. What could have caused bad sectors, how do I fix
it, and should the scan take so long?

Thanks.

Seems very odd to have twp diskd develope bad sectors in such a short period
of time.

Wonder what the real cause is.

That hard drive is no good. You may have replaced it a month ago, but perhaps you
got a bad drive, or a used or refurbished one. Where did you get the drive? IBM
has been out of the hard drive business for quite a while. Hitachi bought their
drive division, and supports the Travelstar:

Hi,

Bad sectors don't get better with time. Once Windows starts finding
them, it'll always keep finding more. It's a bum drive that should be
returned to where you got it.

I disagree with both assertions. Well, just the 'keep finding more' for the
out of the box Win 98 product. I got a 1 gig Maxtor about 1997 (well it was
big for the time) and Norton found several bad sectors within a month.
I used the disk as a slave disk when disks got roomier. In all i used it
about 6 years. Never was another bad sector found.
