I understand. But system.ini is a small text file and we will notice if
something else was attached. Anyway, maybe copy&paste is the better way.

And you can attach a copy of the system.ini file to your next reply.
Maybe somoene can discover the problem.

If that's all there is to it, then it's no wonder you're having problems -
around 2/3rds is missing!

Default No sound unless started in Safe mode (WinME)

OK Doug, just to recap a little,

Make a copy of system.ini and keep it safe (in case you need to use it
later).
Now try 'looking' at it the working file in notepad and see if you can find
a line (or lines) referring to multimedia devices or sound card drivers.

Edit the file by 'Remming' (remarking) it out (I.E. - Type rem or put a semi
colon at the start of that line) ONE LINE AT A TIME and save the file (it
should save itself as system.ini)

(Just another thought, you may be able to achieve the same objective by
editing(enabling/disabling the check boxes in) the system.ini tab in
msconfig.exe)

Two lines to consider initially a-

[boot]
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll ***************
user.exe=user.exe
gdi.exe=gdi.exe
sound.drv=mmsound.drv ***************
dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll
comm.drv=comm.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
shell=Explorer.exe
*DisplayFallback=0

Re-boot into Normal Mode and see if your sound card now works. Repeat the
process for each line, one at a time, until you find the offending line -
re-editing (removing) the semi-colon from the previous save.

You may have to try other lines too - as I said elsewhere, I don't have a
WinMe box available to give you direct comparisons. Maybe Noel, MP or
someone else could jump in here.

(I still find it odd that a 'fresh' install (of the SB drivers) hasn't
corrected it)

Good luck

Mart

Actually - looking a little closer, that one looks like the default 'new'
system.ini rather than anything else.

If that's all there is to it, then it's no wonder you're having

problems -
around 2/3rds is missing!

Undo the amendments in MSCONFIG, and repost.

Default No sound unless started in Safe mode (WinME)

Noel, thanks for all your help so far. I did what you said but I still have

Remove that - it's part of a Spyware install!!

Correct the next line to read
[boot description]

under
[drivers32]
remove the excess entries for
msacm.ctmp3=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ctmp3.acm
remove the following lines
CacheBlockSize=000840FF1E20C30149
CacheLineSize=0088A4F7B137C301CF

Under [mci]
remove
QTWVideo=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCIQTW.DRV

add

[TTFontDimenCache]

see how that works, and post back the new file

Doug, where have the two previously(?) 'remmed' lines gone?

[boot]
; drivers=mmsystem.dll ***************

; sound.drv=mmsound.drv ***************
etc., etc...

Have you tried re-installing your sound card drivers? There doesn't seem to
be any reference to its drivers anywhere in your latest system.ini file. In
fact, I didn't recognise ANY Creative Labs drivers in any of the files
you've posted.

I'm lost g

Mart
