Default Maxtor Hard Drive Failures

Having had crashes in the past, I was happy to see a site go up taking
a survey of Maxtor hard drive failures.

They will contact you with the final results if you provide contact
info. It might be interesting to see how many had issues with warranty
replacements.

The website is at http://www.maxtorsurvey.envy.nu/

It would only be interesting if it compared Maxtors to all the other major brand
HDDs.

In oups.com,

I use Maxtor drives almost exclusively. Never had one fail yet. However,
before using them (I used to use a *different* brand and suffered two
horrific failures in a row) I did some reading on them and found that the
best idea was to give them some space in the box. I've done this since day
one and had nary a problem. I note the survey hasn't a place for people to
input the information if they've never had a complaint.

I use exclusively Maxtor drives and have rarely had problems with them. The
two drives that have developed problems (not outright failures but
increasing bad sectors) were replaced without problems. At work I have
about 140 computers that use Maxtor drives, are on 24/7 and have been for
three years. I think I've replaced maybe three of them to date.

As this "survey" doesn't ask about folks who don't have problems I suspect
any results it reveals will be sadly skewed to say the least.

These days I also exclusively use Maxtor drives too.

I have also heard from some of the top hard drive software developers that feel
the same way so I know I'm in good company that reinforce my own experiences
and feelings. Maxtor gives the best prices with more GB size, performance, and
most importantly longevity.

......ps - of course unnecessary heat for all hardware is problematic and
especially for HD's, and so it makes more that good sense not to put any HD's
in a tight space with inadequate air ventilation because you're asking for
problems - especially in already hot climates. Keep it well ventilated which
increases the longevity substantially; that goes for all electronic and
mechanical hardware really.

I had a 2 year old maxtor 20gig drive that ceased to function (user
stupidity error: I have a backup generator when NSPower dies and it started
up during a brown out transient spikes of several thousand volts) and was
replaced by maxtor with a 40gig drive the, returned to me by courier in 13
days, with all my data and documents recovered except two partial document
files actually under the drive heads when the crash occurred

have 3 pcs with a total of 10 maxtor drives 6 40gig 4 160gig, +Promise card
for large drives
I am an old 41, retired guy with nothing else to do but shoot DV and email
them to my sisters
dv processing is drive intensive

apart from that one never a problem
coincidence, now I have a UPS
