Default serial mouse no where to be seen

We have 2 similar aged P MMX pcs, one with 98se(1) and other with ME(2),.
Both pc's used serial mouse and serial kb. PC (1) is working fine. (the pc's
are not connected to each other)

The ME pc broke down a while ago (hardware issue). So, I took out hd (1) and
put in hd (2) that is with the ME into pc(!). It boots up ok but the mouse is
no where to be seen while the kb seems to be ok as I was able to move the
'dot' when I press '+'/arrow sign.
Pls advice how can I solve this problem, many thanks. When it rains, it
never seems to stop......

Boot into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 keys at startup) and navigate to Device
Manager (using the keyboard Tab and arrow keys etc.) Look for ANY/ALL mouse
and pointing devices and "Remove" them.

Shut down and reboot (into Normal Mode). WinMe should re-detect the serial
mouse and install the drivers.

BTW - you *might* find that the mouse actually works in Safe Mode.

I realised that there is a ps2 port, so I attached the ps2 mouse instead of
the serial mouse and boot up under safe mode and the ps2 mouse works.
However, it does not work under normal mode. Under the mouse, there is only 1
ps2 entry. Tried several times (each time delete the ps2 entry) and let it
detect and the mouse works under safe mode BUT not in normal mode, why? In
fact the mouse is no where to be seen. (move all over the place, but its
playing hide and seek, no where to be seen... pls adv as obviously I need it
to work in normal mode.

thanks

In NORMAL MODE? - What do you see in SAFE MODE?

Tried several times (each time delete the ps2 entry)

In SAFE MODE?

and let it
detect

In NORMAL MODE?

and the mouse works under safe mode BUT not in normal mode, why?

But, did you attempt to "Remove" ALL mouse/pointer devices in SAFE MODE?

let me sstart again, with the ps2 mouse.
1/ now I start in Normal, the mouse no where to be seen. Shut down the pc.

2/ Start in safe mode, after hitting ;safe mode' the system seems hang as
the hour glass just appear at the centre of the screen. Hit 'enter' key,
nothing happen, So have to push the power buttons to 'off' pc.

3/ Start in safe mode again(after hitting 'safe mode' get the 'ME' logo' and
the message 'window is by passing the start up files' , {{which I did not get
in (2)}} then scan disk 'c' After finish scanning, get the hour glass (like
in 2) and hang there. Hit 'enter' nothing happen and looks like I have to
push the button again.

4/ repeat (3) and get the same result. After finish scanning the 'c', ithang
there.

((the hd was scan for virus using NAV 2005 and Adware witht he latest
definitions))

what could be wrong and the ME cd has long gone in the bin. Any thing I can
do next. Oddly why was it working before in the 'safe mode.'

what could be wrong?

Well, if not before, you have probably by now made yourself a nice bowl of
mouse driver "soup". (Conflict of drivers)

From your responses, it would seem that you didn't follow (either of) my
previous suggestions - the first in particular. However, the fact that you
swapped the HD from one machine to another will probably have upset the
'original' WinMe registry, as at least some of the other hardware (and
drivers) will be different.

Further, the fact that "The ME pc broke down a while ago (hardware issue)."
doesn't bode too well - I just wonder what else was/is faulty?

and the ME cd has long gone in the bin.

Along with the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk, I suppose - Oh dear!!

Any thing I can do next.

In view of the state that you are now in - and the fact that HD is in the
'wrong' machine (registry issues) - and that you no longer have a WinMe CD,
you might just as well start over and clean install Win98se - assuming you
still have that CD!!. And from this distance, without any tools (the WinMe
Startup Disk or CD) there's little else I can offer.

Oddly why was it working before in the 'safe mode.'

Probably more by good luck than good management - but by not following my
suggestions and switching-off, part way through a setting-up sequence
wouldn't have helped.

You *might* get some help from your local computer techie who would be able
to get a 'hands-on' go at it.

What happen after (4) power off, I decides to take out the ps2 mouse and put
in the serial mouse and boot up on 'safe mode'. It does its usual thing, scan
and the mouse works. In the device mgr, there is the 'ps2 mouse' entry only
and nothing else. I delete it and after a while the mouse icon is gone from
the main tree. BUT the funny thing is the mouse is still working after I
deleted it and (no mouse icon in the main tree). I can navigate to open my
word file etc.

Its a real mystery, normally when you deleted the driver, once gone, you
expect the mouse to stop working immediately. any idea whats going on here?

Next, start in normal mode and the serial mouse is noway to be seen. Anthing
I should do in bios. With the serial mouse in place, its back to square one.

sorry that I did not follow what was explain earlier. Think it come back to
the same situation, where could the conflict lies? Pleas help as reformat is
the last thing I want to do, thanks

OK, although you "Removed"or 'deleted' it in DevMan, the (basic) mouse
driver is still (usually) resident until you power-down. Hence it continued
to 'work'

Next, start in normal mode and the serial mouse is noway to be seen.

Did WinMe advise you that it (the mouse) was being detected during the
boot-up process - and ask you for a driver disk? (BTW - What make of mouse
is it and was a driver disk provided with the mouse? - Does it have a Wheel
as well as the two (L & R) buttons? If so, it may require a special driver
rather than a 'Generic' driver.

Are there any conflicts (Yellow question marks or exclamation marks) showing
in DevMan in NORMAL MODE when the mouse isn't being seen on the screen?

... Anthing I should do in bios.

No, I don't think it's a BIOS problem - more likely a WinMe driver problem -
BUT I am very concerned about the likelihood of a 'mis-matched' registry,
due to swapping the drive from the other PC.

If you haven't got a WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk, then you *MAY* be able to
make one yourself (see How to Create a Startup Disk in Windows Me) -
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;267287 )

If you are unable to do that, then download an image and make one from
www.bootdisk.com . **Be sure to read the instructions.**

Bed time here in the UK (8hrs ahead of you guys) see how you get on.

The serial mouse is just the L/R click only.

Since the serial mouse does not work under normal boot, decided to shut
down, took out the serial mouse and boot normally and shut down again. Then
connect the serial mouse again and boot up normally. No, the pc never say
detected a new hardware and cos the mouse is no way to be seen.

Then I boot up again under 'safe mode' , ya, the mouse works but there is no
mouse icon.
There is a question mark under the tree is PCI multimedia .../PCI network
controller/Real magic pro. (this is under the 'safe mode'

(Sorry, I do not know how to go to DM under normal mode since the mouse does
not work)

I hope you can follow my sequence of events and assist to fig out.

On the ME Startup disk, since it can bootup under 'safe mode' can I make the
STARTUP disk from there? What can I use it for?

++
AS for the ps2 mouse did not try any further, fyi the ps2 has a wheel in the
middle besides the L/R click.

Thanks

Bed time here in the UK (8hrs ahead of you guys) see how you get on.

and the mouse works. In the device mgr, there is the 'ps2 mouse' entry

Its a real mystery, normally when you deleted the driver, once gone, you
expect the mouse to stop working immediately. any idea whats going on
here?

Next, start in normal mode and the serial mouse is noway to be seen.
Anthing
I should do in bios. With the serial mouse in place, its back to square
one.

sorry that I did not follow what was explain earlier. Think it come back
to
the same situation, where could the conflict lies? Pleas help as reformat
is
the last thing I want to do, thanks

what could be wrong?

Well, if not before, you have probably by now made yourself a nice bowl
of
mouse driver "soup". (Conflict of drivers)

From your responses, it would seem that you didn't follow (either of) my
previous suggestions - the first in particular. However, the fact that
you
swapped the HD from one machine to another will probably have upset the
'original' WinMe registry, as at least some of the other hardware (and
drivers) will be different.

Further, the fact that "The ME pc broke down a while ago (hardware
issue)."
doesn't bode too well - I just wonder what else was/is faulty?

and the ME cd has long gone in the bin.

Along with the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk, I suppose - Oh dear!!

Any thing I can do next.

In view of the state that you are now in - and the fact that HD is in the
'wrong' machine (registry issues) - and that you no longer have a WinMe
CD,
you might just as well start over and clean install Win98se - assuming
you
still have that CD!!. And from this distance, without any tools (the
WinMe
Startup Disk or CD) there's little else I can offer.

Oddly why was it working before in the 'safe mode.'

Probably more by good luck than good management - but by not following my
suggestions and switching-off, part way through a setting-up sequence
wouldn't have helped.

You *might* get some help from your local computer techie who would be
able
to get a 'hands-on' go at it.

let me sstart again, with the ps2 mouse.
1/ now I start in Normal, the mouse no where to be seen. Shut down the
pc.

2/ Start in safe mode, after hitting ;safe mode' the system seems hang
as
the hour glass just appear at the centre of the screen. Hit 'enter'
key,
nothing happen, So have to push the power buttons to 'off' pc.

3/ Start in safe mode again(after hitting 'safe mode' get the 'ME'
logo'
and
the message 'window is by passing the start up files' , {{which I did
not
get
in (2)}} then scan disk 'c' After finish scanning, get the hour glass
(like
in 2) and hang there. Hit 'enter' nothing happen and looks like I have
to
push the button again.

4/ repeat (3) and get the same result. After finish scanning the 'c',
ithang
there.

((the hd was scan for virus using NAV 2005 and Adware witht he latest
definitions))

what could be wrong and the ME cd has long gone in the bin. Any thing I
can
do next. Oddly why was it working before in the 'safe mode.'

In NORMAL MODE? - What do you see in SAFE MODE?

Tried several times (each time delete the ps2 entry)

In SAFE MODE?

and let it
detect

In NORMAL MODE?

and the mouse works under safe mode BUT not in normal mode, why?

But, did you attempt to "Remove" ALL mouse/pointer devices in SAFE
MODE?

I realised that there is a ps2 port, so I attached the ps2 mouse
instead
of
the serial mouse and boot up under safe mode and the ps2 mouse
works.
However, it does not work under normal mode. Under the mouse, there
is
only 1
ps2 entry. Tried several times (each time delete the ps2 entry) and
let
it
detect and the mouse works under safe mode BUT not in normal mode,
why?
In
fact the mouse is no where to be seen. (move all over the place, but
its
playing hide and seek, no where to be seen... pls adv as obviously I
need
it
to work in normal mode.

thanks

Boot into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 keys at startup) and navigate to
Device
Manager (using the keyboard Tab and arrow keys etc.) Look for
ANY/ALL
mouse
and pointing devices and "Remove" them.

Shut down and reboot (into Normal Mode). WinMe should re-detect the
serial
mouse and install the drivers.

BTW - you *might* find that the mouse actually works in Safe Mode.

We have 2 similar aged P MMX pcs, one with 98se(1) and other with
ME(2),.
Both pc's used serial mouse and serial kb. PC (1) is working
fine.
(the
pc's
are not connected to each other)

The ME pc broke down a while ago (hardware issue). So, I took out
hd
(1)
and
put in hd (2) that is with the ME into pc(!). It boots up ok but
the
mouse
is
no where to be seen while the kb seems to be ok as I was able to
move
the
'dot' when I press '+'/arrow sign.
Pls advice how can I solve this problem, many thanks. When it
rains,
it
never seems to stop......

Decide what mouse you want to use and plug it in.

Boot into the BIOS
- check for mouse-related items
- set "reset configuration data" to Yes
- set "PnP OS" to No
- Save and Exit

Boot into SafeMode
- check DM and toss anything that has a "?" or "x"
- if you have drivers for whatever mouse, install.

Boot into Normal mode.

You should have a mouse by this point but just in case...

Ctrl-Alt-Esc opens the StartMenu; arrow and tab keys should enable you
to Navigate through ControlPanel etc. without leaving the comfort of
your keyboard
