Default Unable to Install Driver

Error reports? Completion??

Mart,

As far as I am aware this is where we started some days ago. The installer
just "hangs" and John has to Ctrl-Alt-Del out.

Just a thought John, (see also my other reply) what happens if you
try to run the setup application WITHOUT the stick plugged in?

Error reports? Completion??

If completion, what then happens if you plug the stick in?

Any errors in Device Manager? etc. etc.

Default Unable to Install Driver

Mart,

Regardless of which site or version of the driver John uses I feel the whole
exercise is somewhat pointless until he solves the problem as to why the
installer freezes and never completes the installation.

Until such time as he can actually install a driver, correct or incorrect, I
feel there is little to be gained by contacting Edimax.

Fair point, however something weird about Edimax's web sites too. The
UK site :-
http://www.edimax.co.uk/en/support_d...id=1&pl2_id=44
includes WinMe drivers, but their International site :-
http://www.edimax.com/en/support_det...1_id=1&pl2_id=
does not.

I wonder if there is a firmware issue here and perhaps the .inf file
is not recognised or fully acted upon by WinMe when it tries to
enumerate the wireless stick. I suppose it could explain that the
drivers will (apparently) install but the system then halts before
completion.
Again, perhaps a time for Edimax Tech Support :-

Default Unable to Install Driver

Mart,

Note that the Edimax UK site includes the Win 98/Me driver version
v1.02.02.0000 for devices using the RT73 series chipset which is missing
from the International Edimax site. It's not as if the two sites make
different claims about the v3.1.3.0 driver used for NT based systems.
Edimax obviously understand that there are still Win 98 and Win Me users in
the UK. vbg

From the file rt73.inf
; rt73.inf
;
; This installation script supports Windows 98,Me,2000 & XP for the
; Ralink RT73 series USB Wireless LAN Card.

The driver package also includes Win Me drivers for the devices using the
more recent RALink 2500 chipset.
From the file rt25u98.inf
; rt2500usb.inf
;
; This installation script supports Windows 98,Me,2000 & XP for the
; Ralink RT2500 series USB Wireless LAN Card.

Default Unable to Install Driver

John,

This looks like your installation was made using the driver from the RALink
site as it doesn't appear to include the 73** chipset drivers which are
included in the Edimax version. I feel these are probably pretty important
given the EW-7318Ug uses the 73** chipset (note the name of the device).

Below I note the differences between your system and mine when installing
using the file Ralink RT7x_070903.exe extracted from the file
EW-7618Ug_EW-7318USg_EW-7318Ug_Ralink RT7x_070903.zip which I downloaded
from the UK Edimax site.

Hi Mike

These are the folders/files that get installed; I'd be interested to
know from you which files I dont install?(ie those omitted from the
complete installation.

C:\Program Files\RalinkCommonRACONFIGCHN;RACONFIGENG;RaUI;R aUI

plus: acAuth.dll, AegisE2.dll, AegisI2.exe, AegisI5.exe, results.txt

Results.txt contains the following text:

message=Driver install was successful.
reboot=1.
code=0.

C:\Program Files\RalinkRT7xWireless
LANCardDriverColnstaller.dll;difxapi.dll;Ralnst; Ralnst64;RalOx64;rt25u98;tr25u98.sys;setacl

plus: rt73.bin, rt73.inf, rt73u98.sys

C:\Program Files\RalinkRT7xWireless
LANCardUtilityRACONFIGCHN;RACONFIGENG;RaUI;RaUI

Plus
C:\Program Files\RalinkRT7xWireless LANCardAegis
containing: acAuth.dll, AegisE2.dll, AegisI2.exe, AegisI5.exe

StartProgramsRalink WirelessRalink Utility

Clicking this Ralink Utilty only puts an Icon in the system tray
which does nothing.

The files listed are from the ME version from the Edimax site; - it looks
like the files you mention 73** just didnt install!

Default Unable to Install Driver

John,

So no rt73 files, no aegis files and no results.txt file containing the all
important message "Driver install was successful." I simply don't know or
understand why this is happening. 99% of cases where the drive install
fails are a result of the windows\inf file hitting the limits of the FAT
filing system due to containing a large number of zero byte oem*.inf files,
usually the result of having a Symantec "product" installed, but you've
already confirmed that that is not the case.

Given that the installer hangs and doesn't complete am I correct in assuming
that you don't see a popup small rectangular window that says something
along the lines of "Updating hardware information database"? This is the
point at which details of the inf files etc is added to the database so that
the device is recognised each time it is inserted. I'm guessing the "hang"
happens before you get to this stage.

Hi Mike,

I do get this message along with its 'updating bar' across the screen! - and
this completes!

Hi Mark,
Delete what in Safe Mode?
If I do whatever you are suggesting how do I get system back to Normal; I've
never (fortunately) had to boot to SafeMode!

That's interesting. I wonder why the installer then hangs as it should have
done its job by then although from your posts it appears it doesn't install
the rt73 driver.
