I believe the free version of Avast still works on Win98SE, as that is what
I am still running on it.

Alwil's AVAST Free Home Edition is still supported for Win98SE:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

It's what I use on both Win98 and XP.

I agree with the others who have suggested Avast.

But also wanted to tell anyone interested to keep their eyes on Clamwin

http://www.clamwin.com/

It works on Win98 but does not currently have real time scanning which is
planned for further versions.

The current version is good for very low resources machines but the user
must allow for periodic scanning.

Norton Anti-Virus 2002 (which is / was available separately, or as part
of Norton System Works 2002) is still functional and can still be
updated (manually or automatically) even today.

There was a major change to NAV from the 2002 to the 2003 (and higher)
versions that made it more difficult to re-licence the product for free.

When ever my NAV 2002 license expires, I uninstall the product (and
search the drive for any directories with symantec or norton in the name
and delete them) and re-install the product. Specifically, the file
"catalog.livesubscribe" must be deleted (ie it must not be present when
you do a re-install).

After reinstallation, simply go here and download 20090215-002-i32.exe

http://www.symantec.com/business/sec...il.jsp?gid=n95

Each day there will be a new updater file (the file name will change,
but the "-i32.exe" part will be the same).

Download that file and run it after you re-install NAV 2002 (assuming
that's what you have). I believe NAV 2001 will also work.

Periodically go and download the newest version of that file and run it
(if you want your virus definitions to be current).

Personally, I think that using a hosts file, using Spybot SD, and having
the most recent version of the Java JRE (and deleting ALL previous
versions) are better ways to keep malware off your system than AV
software.

Also note that updates to the scan engine are usually part of the
definition file - in case someone here wants to argue that the NAV 2002
scan engine is obsolete (it is updated along with the definition file).

If you don't have NAV 2002 or NSW 2002, then look for it on a torrent.
If you can't find a torrent, then post back here and I'll put it up on a
torrent.

NAV 2002 also works on XP, and when a newer version of the "LiveUpdate"
component is manually obtained, I've seen NAV 2002 seek out and perform
the definition update itself from symantec (without needing to manually
go and get the update file as described above).

I just re-installed NAV 2002 on an XP-sp2 machine last week. The
resulting licence expiry date is Feb 2010. Once it was installed, I
copied the catalog.livesubscribe file to another machine where NAV 2002
had expired. By doing this, the other machine now has the same license
expiry date as the XP system.

I should add that a relatively recent version of Symantec Corporate AV
(version 8 or 9) will also run on Win-98. The benefit of that version
is that it never expires.
