Hey Glee, Bert, and Dapper Dan...
I ran Hijackthis and CWSshredder on my problem machine.
CWS found 2 files in IE that it fixed. Thought it was taken care of, reinstalled IE6, rebooted back into windows, and still got the error messages about shdocvw and shdoc401 dll's missing. Q: do I need to reinstall IE5 first, THEN IE6? I fear my headache will involve reinstalling W98....I think I'd rather build a new system first sigh. Thanks for your previous help; any advice on how to continue? |

Hey Glee, Bert, and Dapper Dan...
It does not sound as if you are actually re-installing IE. Choose the 'Custom'
option and then select only those items that were previously installed....they should be shown in bold letters in the Custom install dialog. Follow the instructions carefully, and step by step, in the articles we have linked previously: Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;249191 Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98: http://tinyurl.com/r5ba Where is your Hijack This log? What forum have you posted it on? Please post it here also. One option you can try if the other procedures fail to fix it, is to set ProgMan as the shell, use the Run dialog to run this command, for IE5x: RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance or this, if you have IE6x installed: RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance If choosing the Repair option does not help, and reinstalling also does not help, run the command and choose to "Restore the previous Windows configuration". Then install IE6 fresh after that. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Sally" wrote in message ... I ran Hijackthis and CWSshredder on my problem machine. Hey Glee, Bert, and Dapper Dan...
Yes, it's been reinstalling (I've done so about 3 times,
in fact...). I've used the custom install, checked all the items in bold; it connects me to the internet, downloads components, installs everything. I have followed the instructions very carefully. When I reboot into windows, I get the little drum with the message "updating system settings." Then that's when I get the error messages; I click OK on them, then when they're all done, I am back where I started with a blank desktop, no programs running. My Hijackthis log? I didn't do anything with it. I'm not used to doing much outside of a windows environment (all of what I've been doing the past 24 hours is totally new to me; I'm learning a lot!) so I didn't know I should have done anything after hijackthis was done. I didn't delete anything; I don't know what most of it means, whether it's critical to keep or not, that is. I'll try again tomorrow (Sunday) and post my results. I truly appreciate all your help. Hey Glee, Bert, and Dapper Dan...
Hmm. Have you tried the earlier procedures in the article Bert originally posted?
Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;249191 What about "Restore the previous Windows configuration" option from the menu that appears when you run this command from ProgMan? (for IE5x) RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance (for IE6x) RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance Hijack This: Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, double-click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Copy the log files and paste them into a reply here. A tutorial for using Hijack This is located here, and will show you how to copy/paste into the reply: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ An in-depth tutorial is he http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.htm -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Sally" wrote in message ...
