Msg states 'need win2k or higher'.

Just FYI, AVG 7.5 works fine on Win98SE, and is supported till the end
of 2008.

Have a laptop finally running and need an AV program. (See Invalid
Hibernation partition/file???)
Running AVG on all other systems(XP) but 98se can't handle 7.5 or
8.0...
Would also like to load a firewall program, currenly running ZA on
other systems also.

Any suggestions please,

Default Antivirus for win98se

For a zipping program I have been using Winrar 3.6 beta 2, from
www.rarlabs.com/, on both Win98se & Win2kPro systems with good success.
They now have 3.8 beta 4 out, these beta programs are free shareware
versions, for a user to try free for typically 40 days, or so. Using
this & Free Commander, at www.freecommander.com/, similar to the old
Win3x File Commander but with many more features, I can open a
compressed folder and view files, copy into, or out of, the compressed
folder as though it is an ordinary folder. I have been using this on an
old raid 5, using a rocket raid 454,
www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/rr454.htm, daughter board with 5 WD160g
drives, win98se server that was setup several years ago with no
problems. All keyboard work is done from a win98 or win2k workstation
with no, or very little, keyboard work done on the actual server. Win98
seems reasonably stable if you don't touch the keyboard. Re-boots only
needed every 30 to 90 days or so, when CPU usage gets to high. I have,
from time to time, 3 to 8 workstations working off the server, used for
data mostly with only one server app on board for workstation access.
Winrar also lets the user password protect the files created although a
couple of features are restricted on the free beta copy. Each time it
is run a pop-up nag appears to upgrade to the full version. Close makes
it go away. I don't know if the latest beta works with win98 though as
I have not run it.

with scheduling being included with the Lightning addon. Digital

Browsing is done using Firefox at www.Mozilla.org/Firefox with the IETab
addon for visiting IE specific web sites such as the local Board of
Realtors & MLS sites. Both are included in www.PortableApps.com which
can travel with you on a flash drive from PC to PC. Open Office Impress,
similar to MS Power Point, in PortableApps is being used for all class
on screen presentations from my flash drive. All these software packages
are free and are supported free under the GNU license.
