Default windows 98 floppy disk version

You still haven't replied if the laptop can use both a floppy and a cod AT
THE SAME TIME or is only one of them active at the time, e.g. slide floppy
drive out and put cd drive in.

In they are, just boot with the EBD floppy and do what people have said.

If you can get the Win98 folder off the cd copied onto the laptops hard
drive you don't need the cd to install. Just run Setup found within that
folder. I had a laptop with no cd drive once and I used a zip drive to do
that.

I already have the CD version of Windows 98.
Is there any way to download the OS onto FLOPPY DISKS or can i use my CD

My Laptop only allows for the use of one drive at a time, and since

windows
won't boot because it's corrupt and won't boot CD's on startup I have to

use
my FLOPPY DRIVE.

If the laptop has both a floppy and a CD drive, go to
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows
98 boot floppy. Use it to start the laptop, select "Start with CD
support", insert your Windows 98 CD, type "setup" and press
"Enter".

Win98 was never released on floppies, though 95 was.

Dan,

Try this:

Boot to Dos or use your Win98 Boot diskette then add these lines to
your autoexec.bat and config.sys files:

To Config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\windows\command\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001

To Autoexec.bat:
LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

Remove your startup disk and boot to Dos Command Prompt Only now you
should be able to access the CDrom. It may be one drive letter
higher than normal. ie D: to E:

After booting to Dos Command Prompt you can get into Windows Safe
Mode with CDrom support by entering:
Win.com /d:m

These lines provide CDrom Dos support for my DVD and CDRW drives.
They work on most CDroms.

No, you can't get Windows 98 on a set of floppy disks. Not that I know of,
anyway. If that were a possibility, we wouldn't have bothered to try and get
you set up some other way.

I have a REAL hard time believing that your CD drive won't boot bootable
CDs. Do you actually have a bootable CD to test with? Have you looked for a
"Boot Order" setting (or similar) in BIOS? What Make/Model is your computer?

Problem is, if you can't boot to a bootable CD then in order to install
Win98 you need to be able to use both a floppy disk and the CD drive at the
same time. Can you do that? The other option is if you have a set of Windows
95 floppies that you can install. (Might be able to do it by installing DOS
first, but I don't know the details on how to get from there to Win98, if
that's even possible.)

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 95
version B boot floppy. This uses DOS version 7, which is usually sufficient
for Windows 98 setup. Start the laptop with the floppy and type the
following five lines. Then shut down, remove the floppy drive, install
the CD drive and restart. Please note that the CD drive will probably
be assigned drive letter "R:". Also, you may want to save copies of
the existing "c:\autoexec.bat" and "c:\config.sys" files.

copy /y a:\mscdex.exe c:\
copy /y a:\autoexec.bat c:\
copy /y a:\config.sys c:\
copy /y a:\cd?.sys c:\
sys c:

before you do anything...run a ram test...
if your ram is bad...doing a new install won't help you...
it's possible your present system is ok.

as to loading win98 on floppies...
though it's not impossible...it's highly impractical

W98 first edition was available on floppies; the .cab files for 98SE are too
big to fit on a floppy. In any case, the W98 floppies have not been
available for years.

I have a windows 98 CD version, but my laptop won't boot from a cd and
there's no way to make it.

Is there any way I can make or get Windows 98 on floppy disks?

Yes; generically, the process becomes one of unlinking the copying of
the pre-installation file set from the installation of it.

But there's an easier way; just boot the laptop from a DOS mode
diskette that can drive the CD. Win98 CDs are generally not bootable,
so this is in fact the "standard" way it is done.

However, I always prefer to unlink the two processes, so that:
- failure to copy source doesn't confuse with failure to install
- all links to the OS source are effortlessly met without disks

First, make sure you have an effective boot diskette. That's easy in
Win98, as (unlike Win95) it can make these; see "create EBD".

Second, make sure your HD's suitable (should be 137G, BIOS should
see full capacity) and prepared (at least an active primary partition,
plus I prefer an extended partition with at least one logical volume).

Third, make the primary partition bootable, i.e. do a Sys C: (or
Format C: /S) and test that it boots to DOS mode prompt.

Fourth, copy the Win98 insytallation file set from the CD to the HD,
preferably the logical "D:" on the extended partition, as this:
- prevents constant head travel over this large cold "lump" in C:
- allows C: to be wiped and OS rebuilt without repeating above steps

Copy the WIN98 directory and its files, but you can leave aout the
subdirectories with it (e.g. OLS etc.).

Fifth, install the OS. Boot the HD, select the drive letter where the
files are stored, e.g. D:, then CD into the directory, e.g. CD \WIN98.
Then enter the Setup command, and off you go.

Sixth, install your hardware-specific drivers, either directly from
their disks, or by first copying to HD volume D: etc. as above.

As I've discovered when trying to install 98 from a copy of the CD
placed in a temporary directory on the hard drive, windows will refuse
to install if it detects "win.com" anywhere on the hard drive. This
may be a function of the particular flavor being installed (OEM,
upgrade from w-95, full retail, etc).

If you do copy the win-98 CD to the hard drive with the intent of
running the install from that location, I recommend deleting "win.com"
before starting the install.

Yes, that's indeed what it is (i.e. it's an OEM thing, the idea being
that OEMs won't ever try to preserve anything when they install the
OS). But in my experience, renaming it away on C: is enough.

If you do copy the win-98 CD to the hard drive with the intent of

I haven't found it necessary to do this to the Win.com within the
pre-installation file set as copied to the HD. Maybe that's because I
always keep that on a logical volume off C: - then again I see many
OEM-built PCs that have the file set in C:\WIN98 etc.

But yes; good catch, if doing a parallel or "repair" install using the
OEM pre-install file set and product key.

Default windows 98 floppy disk version

Ok everyone, I did mention that my laptop only uses ONE drive at a time
(EITHER FLOPPY OR CD)

Second of all, windows 98 (i'm not sure about SE though) did come on
FLOPPIES because it says it right in the manual for WIN 98.

Now does anyone know how to, or where to get win 98 on floppy disks?

My laptop is 12 years old, originally came with 95, and the BIOS doesn't
boot CD's ok.

All I asked was if someone could help me get the Windows 98 floppy disks, I
don't know why everyone is writing about something else that I don't care
about.
