Default annoying clicking noise after accidentally deleting audio driver and reinstalling

I accidentally deleted the audio driver or device while in device manager.
When I let Windows re-install it, I get a clicking noise over the audio of
almost all audio sources until I click on the taskbar, then the noise is
gone and the audio is normal.
I used the Win98 CD for the drivers instead of the Win95 recovery CD that
was the original OS.
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
Dave

IF the files weren't deleted, and you only let windows reconfigure that one
driver, a simple fix might be to just restore the previous day's registry
backup. (There are normally 4 previous days of registry backups, so time
is of the essence here).

(OTOH, if you did a more complete reinstall of Windows, with a bunch of
drivers, this may not be such a great idea)

This was done over a year ago, so restoring the registry isn't an option,
and yes I let windows reconfigure the audio drivers. It isn't too bad, just
annoying that I have to click on any icon on the (right side) taskbar to
stop the noise.

Perhaps Windows didn't pick the best (meaning, most up-to-date) sound driver
for your system, and you can go into Device Manager, and select Update
Driver, and do a search for a better one (if it's still on your hard drive,
or from a sound driver on a CD that came with your system). (?)

And while you're in there (Device Manager), make sure there are no yellow
exclamation points, indicating some other, possibly related, driver
problems.
