switching from 100-T to Gigabit
My boss wants to switch our peer-to-peer network from 100 base-T to
Ethernet. Is this just a matter of upgrading the NICs and Hub? We have Cat 5 cable. I'm wondering how much improvement we'll see in speed if we don't do any other computer upgrades except the NICs. Is there a utility I can use to see the current speed? I thought I could get a baseline while everyone's at lunch and no one except me on the network. Thanks in advance Marcie |

Thanks in advance Marcie you could try SiSoft Sandra which does network speed comparison you would need to replace hub/switch/router's and NIC's ...cabling "should" be ok (may not attain max speed) would give a noticable increase in transfer speed |

Yes, switching NICs and the switch (I don't think anybody does Gigabit hubs) should be all that's required, as long as your Cat5 is up to spec. I'm wondering how much improvement we'll see in speed if we don't do any other computer upgrades except the NICs. It'll depend on how you use it and how powerful your computers are -- it's not easy to move that much data. My guess is you'll probably about double your effective transfer rates. Don't expect them to go up by an order of magnitude, or anything close. Is there a utility I can use to see the current speed? Thanks for the info. Sounds like changing over shouldn't be too difficult
and a something we'll definitely benefit from. Appreciate the help. "Marcie" wrote in message ... My boss wants to switch our peer-to-peer network from 100 base-T to Ethernet.
