Default Compaq 2286: Flash Drive (SanDisk Cruzer mini) won't work to transfer files to new mac...

I finally am getting rid of my '99 Compaq 2286 Presario which runs
Windows 98. (Not the SE Second Edition.) I want to move files to the
new computer (a mac G4) so I bought a SanDisk Cruzer Mini USB flash
drive to transfer files, but discovered that my Win 98 doesn't have a
driver for this flash drive.

There is a driver for Win SE, but I can't find a way to download that
version so that I can then download the flash drive driver. Are you
following? Win98 is not reading the flash drive.

So now what? Any suggestions? It's not a lot of files, but too much to
email to myself and put on the new computer.

Thanks for your replies/ideas.

That device is never going to work on Win98 "Gold" and to upgrade to SE
would cost at least $30 (see http://tinyurl.com/gb5wf)

In order to suggest alternatives, we really need to know how much data
you're talking about. Also, what kind of internet connection do you have?
Plus, you *are* aware that many file formats are not directly transferrable
from PC to Mac, right?

Have you tried putting all the files into a ZIP archive and seeing how large
that is?

This might seem a bit exotic, but it will be free, and might have other
uses:

Download the ISO file for KNOPPIX, a free LINUX distribution that runs
directly from CD (or DVD). Do this on any computer with a high-speed
copnnection, a CD/DVD burner, and software that can burn from a file (e.g.,
Easy CD Creator, Ner). Note that the smallest KNOPPIX ISO is about 700 Meg,
thus the need for the high-speed connection.

Boot the old PC from the KNOPPIX CD. If necessary, change the BIOS boot
order to CD first, then hard dirve. Be default KNOPPIX will NOT write to
the hard drive, but it can read FAT and FAT32. KNOPPIX is not as limited as
98. It will recognize USB 1 and 2, firewire, NIC cards, ZIP drives, etc.
Try plugging in the USB flash drive. Assuming that it is recognized, use
the KNOPPIX file manager to copy files to it.

You could copy all personal files, but consider how you will view them on a
MAC? JPG, MOV, TXT will certainly work with native MAC softweare. DOC may
work, depending on what workprocessor you have. I am not sure about other
file types.

Thanks Gary.
Here are some details:
It's just Excel and Word docs. Nothing fancy.
I've got a cable internet connection.
I don't have a zip drive, but should I download WinZip and compress it?

What about getting an 'ethernet crossover cable' as a friend suggested?

I have moved all the docs into one folder on the PC desktop --
'properties' shows the size is 36mg (38,711,000 bytes used). But it's
215 files. If I had to, I could survive without them on the new
computer and try to get my $30 back for the flashdrive... Anyone wanna
buy a new but opened 1GB sandisk Cruzer Mini flash drive? I wonder if
Costco would take it back... and I purposely haven't cashed the $15
rebate check yet.

Thanks, Bob!

Exotic could be a fun challenge and free is always good.

I will try this from the mac.

Is there one particular web site to visit for the download? I looks
like it is listed in many places -- but first hit on google said their
server is down... is it available in many different places?

Not talking about a ZIP drive. Talking about WinZip or similar. One has
nothing to do with the other, despite the names.

Yes, I'd use WinZip to build decently sized archives, say something less
than 5 MB each, then email them to yourself. Make sure that your outgoing
email client doesn't do a Send/Receive before you close it after sending.
With OE, you can close it before a Send operation is complete and the Send
operation will continue until finished.

The files you're talking tend to be fairly compressible, though that varies
significantly depending on what's actually in them. I just ran a test using
64 MB of DOC files and Winzip compressed them down to 46.5 MB, but when I
looked at the ratios for each file in Winzip, it varied from 99% compressed
to 1% compressed. In general, the larger the file, the less compression it
could manage (many of those files are several MB in size.)

Yes, using a cross-over cable is a possible alternative -- I *think* -- but
it's frustrating enough to network Windows 98 with other Windows systems
unless you have a router involved, let alone connecting and sharing files
with a Mac. Before I did that, I'd use a dozen emails to send 3 MB each.
Really, with high bandwidth that you have, it's not that tedious a process.
And a 3 MB email is nothing. I regularly send/receive emails three or four
times that size using OE. In fact, I'm not sure I'd even bother using
Winzip. I'd probably just hang the files directly onto 6 or so emails and
mail them all at once. If your ISP has problems with that, break them down a
bit more. (ISPs generally have limits on how *many* emails you can send at
one time, to inhibit spammers, but unless yours is *really* restricted, 40
MB of temp storage shouldn't be a problem.)

Heck, if you'd started when you sent the first post to this NG, you'd
probably be done already.

Oh, and why not keep that flash drive? Could come in really handy some day.

? The image is an .iso file. It is one file. I dunno what you clicked on, but the
links for the ISO from U of Wisconsin a
http://knoppix.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirro...6-06-01-EN.iso
or
ftp://knoppix.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirror...6-06-01-EN.iso

The file is 696MB in size.

Once you have it downloaded to your hard drive, you use your CD mastering software's
option to burn a disc from an ISO image file. What CD mastering software do you
have (Nero, Roxio?)?

Default Compaq 2286: Flash Drive (SanDisk Cruzer mini) won't work to transfer files to new mac...

Um, I don't know what burn software I use. (Sorry.) I've only done it
once, but I clicked on 'burn' and copied a few songs from the hard
drive to a CD. The beauty part about the mac for me so far is that
everything is pretty intuitive and, for good or for bad, I don't have
to pay much attention to directions which sound like a foreign
language.

I'll try your instructions and see what happens...

Thanks for the advice!
