Default Linksys Gigabit NIC

Having a problem on one machine (I'm advising remotely, so can't really dig
into the thing...)

Win98SE which has DUN and did have a NIC showing in Safe Mode though it's
not onboard and must have been removed some time ago. Installed Linksys NIC
(10/100/1000 Model EG1032, v3), installed drivers, restarted when prompted
and get Windows Protection Error (no other info.) Went into Safe Mode,
removed all adapters and cleared Network applet, then restarted, reinstalled
NIC, same thing happened. Changed slot, no difference. Haven't tried
different NIC yet, haven't tried the Linksys NIC in a different machine.

Thought I'd post the problem here and see if anyone has experienced similar.
