Default Reinstalling Win98 over SE

Question from a colleague at work.

Her computer came brand new with OEM Win98. It was plugged into the
office network through the router.

About a year ago it needed a new motherboard. When it came back from
the repairshop, it had Win98SE on it. The repair shop did not supply
any back up or recovery disks.

My colleague cannot connect her machine to the office network as it is
at present. As she doesn't have the Win98SE disk, she can't use that
to set it up, and her original Win98 disk can't be used.

The solution she prefers is to re-install Win98. Can she do this
*over* 98SE, or will she have to reformat the HD and then start again?

Any advice or suggestions most gratefully received.

Debbie

This begs the question of why she can't connect to the Office network! -
there's no good reason that the machine should not be able to connect,
unless there are hardware problems.

When she tries to run the connection set up, it asks for the OS disk.
And she only has an old Win98 one.

Ah - in that case, if the techie is worth his salt (but by the sound of it,
he isn't) he'll have saved the files to a folder on the HD, to which you can
redirect the installer - try a Search for files named *.CAB - if you find a
folder with lots of files named WIN*.CAB, then point the installer there,
and it should find the relevant files.

To answer your specific question, no, she can't overinstall Win98 over
Win98SE. She'd have to reformat and clean install Win98. Easier solution
might be to buy a Win98 SE CD.

You kill the techie? g
Seriously - it would seem that he has installed pirated software onto your
colleague's PC - and should be brought to account for his actions, and
remedy the situation (the least he could do would be to fix the immediate
problem - but he should be pointed in the direction of making full
restitution!).

Don't know for sure but installing this might help. It's intended for
dial-up but comes with a lot of other files (it may reinstall the TCP/IP
stack):
