Default USB peripherals cause CDRW problems

I have a HP Pavilion 6465 desktop PC (circa 1999) that is running on Windows
98 First Edition. The PC has only two USB 1.1 ports (port A and port B) on
the rear panel. I have an Iomega CDRW55292EXT USB CDRW on port A and my HP
Deskjet 932C printer on port B and everything works OK. If I remove the
Deskjet 932C printer and place my new HP PSC 2355 printer / scanner / copier
(all-in-one) on port B, I get problems with the CDRW on port A. The problems
a

(1) The CDRW will not read an audio CD correctly. It reports that there is
an impossible 2.147 GB of data on the audio CD, when the real amount is less
than 700 MB. Also, Windows Media Player shows “strange numbers for the
track time and will not play the CD.
(2) The CDRW stops writing data and / or audio CDs when at about 5-20%
complete, the LED on the CDRW turns yellow and HotBurn Pro V2.4.6 reports an
I/O error of “aa/00/00/00, then the PC locks up.

I could see no obvious conflict problems in Windows Device Manager.
However, I am a neophyte when it comes to understanding Device Manager.

How do I resolve this hardware conflict problem between the CDRW and the PSC
2355 other than removing the PSC 2355 from port B when using the CDRW on port
A?

First, really, you should contact HP or search their site for updated
drivers...
http://www.hp.com/

But, I guess it won't hurt to...

(1) Boot to Safe Mode. (Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the
Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(3) Open the CD-ROM branch, by clicking it's plus sign.
(4) Highlight each drive in that branch, & click "Remove".
(Safe Mode may reveal the presence of a "ghost".)
(5) Close up, & boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully Windows will find the correct drivers, & all will be well.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
