Default wireless router & internet access

Just because I have one doesn't mean I know anything! Mine
isn't a normal set up anyway but I want to help a friend who
will do it normally...

1. I read a couple of posts (not here) where they talked
about installing two nic cards. Why? There seemed to be an
underlying humor involved about how to drive your brother
nutz - perhaps that was it... just humor or is there a real
reason to have two of them?

2. Does the tower need to be turned on to power the modem
and router? What if the tower is turned off at night, but
the laptop user wants to access the internet? Is there a
way to give it access w/o keeping the tower on all the time?

3. Just to make sure I'm not reading it incorrectly - as
long as the laptop has an ethernet card, the modem will
automatically detect it, correct? I am assuming there will
be no problem if one computer is a PC and the other is a
Mac. If so, I need to know!

TIA

A friend will help you move.
