Default WMP 7.1 will not open when clicking mpeg links on the web

I really want to reinstall wmp 6.4 and do not want a higher version due to
all the extras - just use 6.4 as a viewer. (See my other post). However, I
temporarily installed 7.1 until someone can help with 6.4. Now I find that
when running 7.1 with files on my pc all is ok but if I click on an mpeg link
to view a video file on the web, 7.1 will not open. The only changes I made
were to make the reg change to prevent the wmp upgrade process from running
but I do not think this should be a problem. I found this regedit suggestion
in the ms knowledge database and an positive no other changes in the reg are
an issue. Please help me get 7.1 running temporarily until I can get
successful info on installing 6.4 again.

Left click once an mpeg file, hold down the shift and right click the file,
select open with and choose 7.1 as the application to be used. Be sure to
mark the "always" box.

Ron,
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately your suggestions has not helped
as I still cannot download mpg files. I realized that you suggestion will
associate these files with media player. I check my file associations first
thing to make sure all was correct. I do not have any trouble opening this
files already residing on my PC. The problem is clicking on links that would
normally have opened the video in which I could subsequently save to my hard
drive. Now when I click on a video link, the bottom left border of the
browser states "start downloading from site...." followed by the site and
file. However after a minute or so that message goes away while the windows
logo in the upper right continues to rotate as if still working or trying to
locate a page or file.

Ideally I would like to reinstall 6.4. During instalation, after all files
are extracted, the installation starts and seems to have up while displaying
the message "currently installing windows media player" and thats it...
Eventually I'll have to cancell it.
Hope you can help. Thanks
