I just wanted to say even though I might rant about MS and their seemingly
non-concern about the Home PC user.
MS did not have to make available the "Windows Update Catalog" at the
update site.
They could have just made you use the results from the update scan only.
Which in that case an OS would be dead at the end of it's support.
With the Update Catalog one has the opportunity to back up the updates for
future use without the Windows update site.

Microsoft does have their issues. I think that they've made some good
changes in the right direction lately with their care for the home-user
end-users and with their greater attention to security implications and
mitigation of the risks. I think that they're a giant company, perhaps too
big to be 'agile enough' to respond as fast as we'd like them to. I think
that juggernaut is also an asset though because once they do get turned in a
new direction, and assuming that direction is better, they have a hard time
changing course.

I tend to dis-agree to an extent; We are talking about a company whose
assets are beyond calculation and growing by the nano-second.
With that in mind, what is to stop them employing 5 more staff for the
purpose of tending win98; thus also giving employment to 5 more out
of work people.

Like anyone who has enough computer knowledge,that MS would be interested
in, would be out of work.

But seriously, its not as if 5 new workers would have to 'invent' win98,
they just have to keep an eye on it and do what may be necessary when
necessary. And know what, I dont even care if it takes more than that, they
should be looking after loyal customers who helped make them what they
are today.

I guess. But it has always been this way with all computer makers, that they want us to move on. They always will make something just "better" enough to entice & suspend support for the established hardware or OS. Just be sure to update virus checkers & make a full system backup for dire emergencies, to hold on long as possible!
