Default Hard Drive Copying

My Windows 98 computer (from 1999) came with a 7.85 GB Hard drive. When I
filled it (2003) I added an 80 GB drive. I moved everything I could from the
original C: drive to the new D: drive and while not perfect, everything
worked. I recently upgraded Norton Anti-Virus and the new program filled the
C: drive again. I have a "Disk Wizard" that came with the 80 GB disk: Can I
use it to copy (or move) everything from C: to D:? How do I then make my
computer boot from the D: drive?

Windows boots from the first primary partition it finds. Therefore, to make
your system boot from the current D drive you need to:
1. Confirm that the drive has a primary partition. FDISK /STATUS will
reveal the exact partitioning of the drive.
2. Adjust the drives so that the second drive is changed to the primary IDE
device. This probably involves changing jumpers on the drives. If you are
using Cable Select (CS) then you need to change the drive positions on the
cable.
3. Make the current second drive bootable (eg, SYS C: from a DOS boot) and
install windows.

Your 'Wizard' might be able to help with step 3, if it creates an exact
image copy of one disk to another. It depends on the capabilities of the
utility and how you use it.

I don't believe the Disk Wizard will do what you need. Uninstall Norton
(personally, I would never have bought nor installed it as it is horrible
bloat ware) and reinstall it to D: drive. Do the same to any other program
you have installed on C: for which you have the CD or setup.exe file. In
the future, do not install programs to C: drive.

Clean out your Temp folder, recycle bin and temporary internet file folders.
If you use Internet Explorer, click tools, internet options, temporary
internet files settings button and set a small setting (say 15 mb) for
storage of the files. If you use Outlook Express, move the Store folder to
D: drive (create a folder named Store on D: drive then on OE, click tools,
options, maintenance tab, store button and browse to the Store folder).

Move My Documents to D: drive using Tweak UI. which is available from:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../NTTweakUI.asp
Right-click the TweakUI .inf file and select install. Should a notice
appear saying a disk is required, click OK and another screen appears. Click
browse, go to the folder containing Tweak and click OK and OK.

Which DiskWizard (one word) are you using?
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...s/discwiz.html

Believe its only used for bare drives, no partitions installed. Would have
worked if first used when you got the 80GB.

You're going to have to shrink D:, move it to the end of the drive. Then
copy C: to the newly created empty space on the 80GB drive.

There a trial software from terabyteunlimited that will do the trick. Or
bite the bullet for Partition Magic.
