lost word files
I mistakenly deleted a number of word files from my recycle bin.
How do I retrieve them? I can not find a "system restore" program. I use windows 98 |

Even if Win98 had System Restore, it wouldn't do you any good. System
Restore (Windows ME and XP) only backs up System files, not personal documents. If you *must* get those files back, if they are critical to you, then the first thing you want to do is reach down and unplug the machine. Don't shut down normally, just pull the plug. Then pull the drive out and go find someone who can retrieve the data for you without performing any more write operations to it. The more that drive is written to, (and Windows is almost constantly writing to the HDD), the more likely the data won't be recoverable. For simple data recovery, I use R-Studio from www.r-tt.com. You don't want to directly mount the drive to any Windows NT-based system (including, especially, Windows XP), since such systems will write to every drive. There are other tricks. But, again, the main consideration is to prevent anything from writing to that drive until you can image it for R-Studio or run R-Studio directly. -- Gary S.
