USB/Firewire in Windows ME not working
Computer: Sony Vaio PCG-XG700 running Windows ME, w/ 256MB RAM, PIII 750MHz.
Problem: The USB and Firewire ports do not work. In Device Manager Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller and Sony CXD 3222 OHCI i.LINK(IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller both have a yellow exclamation mark in device manager and show the following message in properties: "This device is not working properly because ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering is not working properly (Code 31.) To view the properties for ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering and see why it is not working, click Properties." When I click Properties the ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering Properties show "This device is disabled (Code 22.) Click Enable Device to enable this device." When I click Enable Device, the computer freezes. If I start in Safe mode I see 4 instances of ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering under System Devices. The last one has a red X on it because it is disabled. If I enable it and reboot, Windows ME blue screens on startup with error 0E:FFFF:FFFFFFFF. If I uninstall the problem "device", Windows ME tries to reinstall it on startup but freezes as it is doing so. The problem ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering is using the same driver (PCI.VXD) as the other three that are working properly. All 4 are using Interrupt Request 09. Windows will not allow me to change this (error: "No Modifications Allowed: This resource setting cannot be modified."). Msinfo32 shows that IRQ 09 is being used by the following with OK status: SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus S3 Graphics Inc. Savage/IX Display Driver SSVID=104D YAMAHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM) WDM Communication Device Ricoh RL/RB5C478 CardBus Controller Ricoh RL/RB5C478 CardBus Controller ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering Msinfo32 shows the following Problem Devices ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering / Error 22 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller / Error 31 Sony CXD 3222 OHCI i.LINK(IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller / Error 31 The BIOS version is the latest that is recommended by the Sony website, but the BIOS has no settings for USB or 1394. I can only set the Interrupts for Infrared, Serial and Parallel ports. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the USB and 1394 Controllers with no change. I have tried other drivers. I have disabled the YAMAHA PCI Audio CODEC and the Ricoh Cardbus Controllers. No change. If I disable IRQ Steering (under PCI Bus device properties) the USB and Firewire Controllers give the following error. "This device is not working because Windows Support For Programmable PCI Interrupts is not enabled. (Code 29). To enable this support, click Enable IRQ Steering." System Restore only shows 3 restore points all from today so that is of no use to me. The system has 3 hardware profiles: Original Configuration, Dock 1 and Undocked, but I don't get a prompt when Windows starts asking me which profile I would like to load. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Background: Owner of the Sony Vaio PCG-XG700 running Windows ME wanted to use an iPod with the laptop and asked me to help. I just want to get her USB port working so I can then purchase XPlay so she could use her iPod with her laptop. By the way, I did try upgrading the operating system to Windows 2000 and the USB/Firewire issue went away but then the computer started freezing on "Starting Up". Exactly 7 bars of the progress bar would load and it would freeze, which is an even tougher problem to troubleshoot since I get no error messages. So I restored the image I had made of the Windows ME system. |

There is a known incompatibility in ME between Firewire and USB2 ports.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;268452 It may be worth trying that fix, if you have it handy, or speaking to MS if not. Try moving the cards around so that the USB and Firewire are further apart - that should take them off the same ACPI register, and may free things up -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "WinXPnotebookuser" wrote in message ... Thanks for the response. I am pretty sure the port is USB1.1 (The laptop was
purchased in 2000 and USB2 usually shows "Enhanced" in the controller name). Also it is a notebook computer so moving PCI cards around is not an option.
