PING PCR
I like to stay in the NG. Mine is a Compaq 7470. I think it's hard drive
crashed just after a year. The monitor went after three. Now, I've replaced the mouse. The printer won't print, but I think it's out of ink. QuickRestore from Eartition worked well for a while, but finally became uppity. That is all gone now, & I use BootItNG for backups. I did download & install all the Compaq Win98SE SoftPaqs from their site, including SP13723, 13799, 13978, 14013, 14866, 15206, 15744, 16793, 17253, 17398, and 17455 (BIOS flash). I have disabled the Task Scheduler, including the Microsoft Auto Critical Update in there and Walign. Also, I have removed a lot of Compaq with Add/Remove: 1. Compaq Automatic Updating for Windows 2. Compaq WEBISP 3. Compaq WEBREG 4. Compaq Wizard Host Online 5. Compaq NET Registration 6. Service Connection (BackWEB) "System Configuration Utility, Startup" shows these are unchecked, some of which happened automatically, after that session in Add/Remove: 1. MoneyAgent 2. MSMSGS 3. Service Connection 4. LoadQM 5. bpcpost.exe 6. cpqns 7. CPQInet 8. isdbdc 9. Cal reminder shortcut That leaves 18 still checked, last I looked. Although I report no ill effects, best do a little additional research, before you enter Add/Remove for this. Also, many say, a BIOS flash is a dangerous thing. I did mine actually twice, before I knew that— and before I knew it need only be done once!. Finally, before you make big changes, surely it is wise to make a full system backup. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Curt Christianson" wrote in message ... | I'm running a new setup here--all Compaq. It's likely that your Compaq is almost an *entirely* different animal from
Curt's, assuming his is a new model. HP bought Compaq between then and now, I believe. Much has changed. -- Gary S. Yea. But the HP site still seems to have those SP's on a model number
basis. He should be OK going there, but it will offer different ones, yea. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Gary S.
