Thanks Yes provided that a) you chose to retain the Win Me files when upgrading, b) have not since deleted those files (check in Add/Remove Programs), and, c) have not since upgrading to XP chosen to convert your filing system from FAT32 to NTFS. Note also that any applications that you have either installed or upgraded since upgrading to XP will be rolled back to the state they were in when you ran Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |

I have not yet upgraded to XP.
I see, nothing like being prepared. Note that I have never attempted to uninstall XP (see below). For once I have done everything right. I've read so many complaints regarding XP making me somewhat reluctant to proceed since WinMe is working so well. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for the help. Whether you should upgrade to XP rather depends on a number of factors including a) any problems you are having at the moment (which I take to be none), b) whether your hardware will support XP, c) whether you have applications that require XP and d) whether there are features in XP you cannot do without. Depending on the age of your hardware and when you think you might next be purchasing a new computer it might be sensible to put off upgrading at this time and sit it out running Win Me until you next change your PC. For myself I have been running XP for nearly five years, initially in beta and then on all bar one PC here since it was launched in 2001. I like PC and use and need many of its features. I have software that will only run on NT based systems (Win2K or XP) and need the large disk support that was introduced in XP SP1 (I have 1 x 80GB and 3 x 200GB disks on this box and also 4 disks including 2 x 160GB drives on my second box). Since I do a fair amount of video work I also need the ability to work with large files (10GB plus) so an XP type system is the only way to go. Nevertheless I have one older box here that only runs Win Me and won't be upgrading it as it does what it needs to do without problems so will run Win Me until it either dies or gets given away. I have no problems with XP but appreciate that each user is different. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Ernie wrote: Yes provided that a) you chose to retain the Win Me files when upgrading, That I have. b) have not since deleted those files (check in Add/Remove Programs), and, I have not. c) have not since upgrading to XP chosen to convert your filing system from FAT32 to NTFS. Thanks for your unbiased opinion. No need to reply but I'm not quite sure whether your comment was said with tongue in cheek. :-) My post attempted, poorly I admit, to say that the benefits of upgrading to XP are not necessarily the same for everyone and that for many users and systems it would be probably be more cost effective to continue with their present setup, especially if working OK, rather than spending money on a software upgrade and only to upgrade as part of the purchase of a new PC at some future date. At least you can see I don't work for Microsoft. vbg Cheers, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |
