Only Two Options in Display Properties
I basically have the same problem as a previous post. I installed a new
hard drive and then installed Windows98se and ended up with only two options in my display properties. My computer is telling me that I have a video adapter and the driver for it is installed. I checked and my computer is telling me that I have the most recent driver installed. I read in the other post that you would need the following info so you would be able to help me and your help is greatly appreciated. I have the same video card as the prior post but I'm not sure if the other components make a difference. Thank You. Keith. You didn't quite provide all the needed information. What is the Brand and
Model number of your computer? Joe "Keith" wrote in message ... I basically have the same problem as a previous post. that is quite definitely not the correct display adaptor, that is the default
adaptor winodws installs when it has no idea what you have, there should be a cd containing the display drivers, or you can open the case and read the make model numbers off the display adapter card. If the display adaptor is mounted on the motherboard then the drivers should be on the motherboard cd. drivers for either should be available from the manufacturers websites, or driverguide.com -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n...aspx?CID=40387 Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ "Keith" wrote in message ... | My computer is not a name brand computer it is one that was put together by | a private computer store in my local area. IC - Here is the display adapter in my PC:
Device Description Device Type nVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 Video Adapter Everest should report something similar. Also, the P5A Asus motherboard you report having is a brand new motherboard since it has PCI express instead of AGP. Are you sure that's the correct number? Joe "Keith" wrote in message ... These are the drivers for your S3 Trio 3D video card:
9x26106.zip 422k 1998 Sep 17 Binary-Trio 3D Win 95/98 MS Logo'd v. 2.61.06 -Prod You can get them he http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/365drv/ Create a folder on your desktop called Video Drivers. Download the video drivers to it. Right click and extract the files to the *same folder*, or extract it using one of the free zip utilities from the PC World Magazine website: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...id,6531,00.asp **If you already have the drivers extracted in a folder you can find, then start here.** Since the drivers do not have a self-installer so you will have to follow these installation instructions for Example 2 or Example 3: DRIVER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel. Start the "Display" applet program. Select the "Settings" page, push the "Change Display Type" button. Push the "Change" button in the "Adapter Type" area. Push the "Have Disk" button and press "OK". Specify the path to the new driver and press the ENTER key: Example 2: Type in the name of the directory where you copied the drivers, either on your local hard drive or on a network share. (***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created on your Desktop***) Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are, choose the "Browse..." button are find them. (***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created on your Desktop***) The "Select Device" dialog box will appear. Select the adapter that corresponds to the one you installed in your machine and click OK. Windows 95 (or Windows 98) will copy the display drivers to the proper directories on your system. Continue choosing Close until asked to restart your machine from the "Systems Settings Change" dialog box. After the system has restarted, you can go back into the Display applet and select alternate screen resolutions and color depths. Make sure you *temporarily* disable your anti-virus program since it can interfere with the video drivers installation process. Reboot your computer. Joe "Keith" wrote in message ... I downloaded the driver to a desktop folder, started the display applet
program, selected the settings page and that is as far as I can go. There is no "change display type" button located on that page. All there is are two little windows, one that reads "colors" and one that reads "screen area" with an "advance" button. The only thing that says anything about display is text above the little windows that reads: Display: Princeton Ultra 72 on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). I tried going to the Adapter Type area and push the "change" button but it doesn't give me a "have disk" button. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks. Keith |

I am confused about exactly what you did. You must follow the instructions
I posted because the drivers for your video card do not have a self-installer. Did you follow the installation instructions exactly? Those instructions are in a text file that can be accessed after you "unzip" the zip file you downloaded. Joe "Keith" wrote in message ... I did exactly as the instructions stated. The problem I have is that when
I push the settings tab in the display applet program the only button on that page is an "Advance" button no "Change Display Type" button available. When I push the "Advance" button I get another applet that has 5 more tabs: General, Adapter, Monitor, Performance and Color Management. I click on the Adapter tab and the page shows that I have a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and also has a "change" button. When I push the "change" button it starts the " Update Device Driver Wizard". I follow through that and get to the page that shows me two choices, one that searches for a new driver and one that will allow me to select the driver from a list. I choose the select a driver from a list and I scroll to the manufacturer "S3" and in the models column it does not have my model, it has a list and in that list it has the following models that are close to what you said I have: "S3 Trio32 PCI (732)", "S3 Trio 32/64 PCI (732/764)", "S3 Trio64UV+ (767)", "S3 Trio64V+ PCI (765)", "S3 Trio64V2-DX/GX (775/785)". The model you said I have is a S3 Trio 3D video card. I'm at a stand still and I hope I explained it a little better this time. I appreciate you sticking with me through all this. Thanks again.
