Default usb drives fr win98

I tried downloading the usb drives from the following site.

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

Now my thumb drives work but my usb internet connection no longer does. I
get an error saying that the hardware is either not plugged in or the drivers
need updating. Which is not the case. Also, i am getting an error in "ACPI
Battery" in my device manager. It says that the NTKERN.VXD is not loading
the proper drivers. Both of these problems began only after i installed the
usb drivers from the above mentioned site.

Anyone have any solutions?
Thanks

The web page gives links to Win98FE and Win98SE driver packages, and instructions on
how to tell which you have. Which operating system do you have, Win98FE or Win98SE?

Which driver set did you download and install?

Did you install version 2.x or version 3.x of the driver set, if using Win98SE?
(Only version 2.x of the driver is needed if there is no USB 2.0 controller on your
system)

Did you install the "unofficial service pack", if using Win98FE? (Some users have
had success without installing that pack, others must use it)

Do you have a USB 2.0 controller or are the computer's ports all USB 1.1?

Is it a laptop or a desktop computer?

You also do not state what type of Internet connection you have, and what USB device
you are using for Internet, and why you are not using a network interface card (NIC)
instead.

What is the exact name of the entry in Device Manager with the problem?
What is the Code number shown for the problem in the properties of the device there?

The best place to get help with those unsupported drivers is he
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605

There are 23 pages of posts in that thread...read through them quickly for similar
issues, or post a question in reply to that thread.

There is no support we can give for those drivers here, and little support is
provided by the makers of the driver set.

Default usb drives fr win98

Let me try to answer all of your questions. First this is an old laptop that
i just replaced the hard drive and there is no information that i need to
keep. I am trying to fix it for my brother. It is 98FE and is running on a
toshiba satellite laptop. I am not using an NIC because i do not have a phone
line internet connection. So i am using a TRENDnet adaptor which allows for
an ethernet connection using the usb port.

I tried installing the service pack and then loading the usb drivers after
which i noticed the problems with loss of internet connection and "ACPI
battery" (this is the line item in the device manager. It is a code 10 which
says that the NTKERN.VXD is not loading the proper drivers.

So i re-installed the os and started over. The same problems occured only
after i loaded the drivers.

I would like to know if there is a fix to make the drivers compatible or how
can i isolate them so i can remove them to try some other drivers.

I beieve that i have usb 1.1.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

OK, this has nothing to do with your USB issue, but what you stated about not using
a NIC makes no sense to me. A NIC is a network card; it has absolutely nothing to
do with a phone line. What type of Internet connection is it...cable or ADSL?
Normally, if you have a network card installed or an Ethernet port built into the
motherboard, you would use that to connect to your cable modem or ADSL modem (or
router), if you want a much more reliable connection than using a USB adapter
device. Is there a network card installed? If so, switch your Internet connection
to Ethernet and forget about the USB device.

That "service pack" is a mix of system files from different operating systems, and I
would not personally use it without *expecting* problems to arise, such as yours. I
would sooner buy a used Win98SE disc and upgrade from Win98FE, than install this
unoffical service pack.

So i re-installed the os and started over. The same problems occured only
after i loaded the drivers.

....but it all works correctly before you install the generic USB driver?
Curious....how are you reinstalling the OS? Are you using the recovery or reload CD
for that model Toshiba laptop, so that all the drivers for that hardware is properly
installed? Or are you installing with a retail Win98 disc and not loading any of
the Toshiba-specific drivers or power management utilities?

I would like to know if there is a fix to make the drivers compatible or how

I don't know how you uninstall the "service pack". I would hope there is an
uninstall entry for it in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. There should be an
entry there for uninstalling the Maximus Decim Generic USB Driver.

I beieve that i have usb 1.1.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, that has nothing to do with my problem. But i'll answer it anyway. The
computer is from 1998 and it does not have an eathernet connection. I have
dsl but this computer has no way of connecting to that because it uses
eathernet. That is why i used the adaptor to connect to the usb port. I use
to connect to the internet (10 years ago) with this computer via a phone jack
line. I have a 56k modem pc card that i install in the laptop. So the problem
is that the usb drives that i installed are not compatable or override the
drives for the trendnet adaptor and have an effect on the ACPI battery in my
device manager. That is what i need to correct if possible.

I hope that cleared up why i am trying to use the usb port for the internet.
Also, let me be clear that this connection worked fine prior to installing
the usb drivers i referred to in my first post.

a NIC makes no sense to me.

I tried installing the service pack and then loading the usb drivers after
which i noticed the problems with loss of internet connection and "ACPI
battery" (this is the line item in the device manager. It is a code 10 which
says that the NTKERN.VXD is not loading the proper drivers.

I would like to know if there is a fix to make the drivers compatible or how
can i isolate them so i can remove them to try some other drivers.

Thanks

I tried downloading the usb drives from the following site.

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

Now my thumb drives work but my usb internet connection no longer does. I
get an error saying that the hardware is either not plugged in or the drivers
need updating. Which is not the case. Also, i am getting an error in "ACPI
Battery" in my device manager. It says that the NTKERN.VXD is not loading
the proper drivers. Both of these problems began only after i installed the
usb drivers from the above mentioned site.

Anyone have any solutions?
Thanks

The web page gives links to Win98FE and Win98SE driver packages, and instructions
on
how to tell which you have. Which operating system do you have, Win98FE or
Win98SE?

Which driver set did you download and install?

Did you install version 2.x or version 3.x of the driver set, if using Win98SE?
(Only version 2.x of the driver is needed if there is no USB 2.0 controller on
your
system)

Did you install the "unofficial service pack", if using Win98FE? (Some users
have
had success without installing that pack, others must use it)

Do you have a USB 2.0 controller or are the computer's ports all USB 1.1?

Is it a laptop or a desktop computer?

You also do not state what type of Internet connection you have, and what USB
device
you are using for Internet, and why you are not using a network interface card
(NIC)
instead.

What is the exact name of the entry in Device Manager with the problem?
What is the Code number shown for the problem in the properties of the device
there?

There is no support we can give for those drivers here, and little support is
provided by the makers of the driver set.

Default usb drives fr win98

FWIW, and again not related to the main issue....you can use a PCCard network card
(Ethernet adapter) in the PCCard slot of the laptop for Ethernet. The problem would
be finding one that still provided Win98 drivers!

I suggest you look in Add/Remove Programs for entries to uninstall the unofficial
service pack you installed and also for the USB driver you installed, and uninstall
both. If that is not an option, then wipe out and reload clean once again so you
can start over with a different USB driver for the thumb drive.

There is a driver you can try at wintricks.it The info for the driver is in
Italian, but it is a simple process to use it if you want to try that instead, after
the "service pack" and generic driver you tried are gone, and you have verified that
your Battery entry is back to normal, and the USB Internet connection is working
again.

I can try to walk you through the process of using this driver after you get the
system back to its original working state. It is not installed beforehand like the
one you tried, rather you point to it when Windows first detects the inserted thumb
drive, as you can see from the pictures on the web pages, even if you cannot read
Italian.
