Default Shut Down not working correctly

I am using a dual boot system. Win98SE on C drive and WinXP Pro on a second
hard drive "D".

I also use a APC Back-UPS

The normal procedure when turning on the UPS to power the PC is a battery
check on the UPS is performed and then I press the start button on the PC to
have the PC boot.

When I shut down when using Win98SE and then go thru the start up procedure
the next time I want to use the PC all starts well.

However when I shutdown when using WInXP Pro and go to start up the next
time, the PC automatically starts when I turn on the UPS by passing the UPS
battery check and my need to press thr start button on the PC.

Observation is that Win XP Pro is not truly shutting down the PC.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have an APC Back-UPS ES 350/500. It has saved me several times now in a blackout! I never installed it's software (that would auto-shut down the computer), though, but just sit at the computer whenever it's on. Everyone should! The whole house goes black, but the computer & monitor are still lit. You get 20 minutes to finish up & shut down. Just, try not to panic, is all!

So, each time you actually shut off the UPS after shutting the computer? Normally, mine is left on. I used to shut it in a thunderstorm, though.

Meaning... when you turn on the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), it does it's battery check? I do believe that can have nothing to do with the OS of your computer. It's all internal to the UPS.

That is VERY mysterious. I'd want to say it must be a BIOS setting detecting something & booting, BUT it shouldn't matter what OS is involved. Should be happening with Win98 too. I don't know what it is!

It would definitely have to shut down badly or well, IF you turned power off at the UPS, I think. That's what you did, after shutting XP? Better be AFTER, too!

PCR..For what it's worth the issue was resolved. It was a registry
entry..seee below my response to the XP group:

Issue resolved. I found the answer he
http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm

Start Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of PowerDownAfterShutdown to 1.

If the value isn't present, add it by creating the string value
PowerDownAfterShutdown and setting the value to 1.

OK. Thanks for the feedback. Still seems a tad mysterious, but I DON'T want to get involved with understanding XP!

Why leave it on when the PC is not on, other than to keep the battery
charged ?
