Default Windows Explorer View Problem

I am not able to see the hierarchy of folders in the left (Folder) pane when
I open Windows Explorer. The right pane displays properly, but the left pane
is blank . Clicking Folders on the toolbar doesn't help. Any suggestions on
how to correct this problem?

Try this

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/greyfolderpane.htm
Windows Explorer folder pane is blank - grayed out

When you open Windows Explorer, you may notice that the folder pane in the
left side is completely grayed out. This happens if the registry key for
Explorer Band is missing. To resolve the problem, type the following command
in the RUN box:

REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW
(Note that the /i parameter is mandatory)

More Information: The following registry key is responsible to view the
explorer pane (left pane). The problem indicated above occurs, if this key
is missing:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]

Explorer's Folder View:

This particular problem is often the result of a damaged IE (usually IE6)
install or update, usually caused by doing so with either Norton or McAfee
AV running at the time. Yes I do realise you are talking about Windows
Explorer rather than Internet Explorer but the two are linked.

The first thing to try is to re-register the file shdocvw.dll. Do this by
typing the following command in the Run box (Start | Run)
REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW.DLL
and then click OK

If that doesn't fix the problem then try repairing IE. Do this using
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Internet
Explorer, click Add/Remove and then on the next screen select "Repair
Internet Explorer" and then OK.

If you don't have an entry for Microsoft Internet Explorer but rather it
reads something like Internet Explorer Q?????? don't worry. This is
because you have installed a cumulative update for Internet Explorer. You
will need to uninstall the update, then go back into Add/Remove Programs,
look again for Microsoft Internet Explorer, repair it and then reinstall
the latest cumulative update.

If this doesn't work or you have no entry for Internet Explorer in
Add/Remove Programs please post back and someone will hopefully post
further details on how to repair Explorer.

Nice fix - but I'm wondering; why would that setting go missing?
Registry damage after bad exit or hardware flakiness? Malware?

I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would
poke me saying "You're next". They stopped that
when I started doing it to them at funerals.

Chris,

The usual reason for this problem which has been posted many many times in
this and other newsgroups is that the user either upgraded to IE6 or IE6
SP1 or installed an IE6 hotfix whilst running either Norton (most often)
or McAfee (occasionally).

Your saying that it is worth trying has worked.

AAH,

Yes I noticed that and thanks for pointing out this particular solution to
the problem. I trust you saw that I have altered my "standard" reply on
this subject to now include re-registering shdocvw.dll as the first option
to try when attempting to solve this problem. Re-registering shdocvw.dll
is one of the actions carried out when repairing Internet Explorer -
KB194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool"

Cheers,

The reason you don't see it, Chris, is quite simple - you automatically
check the health of a system before you do anything to it, and fix it before
updating - therefore the minor un-noticed glitches don't suddenly turn into
dirty great blank screen!g

That's very interesting - I do a lot of upgrading IE to 6 or 6 SP1,
and haven't seen this (tho I've seen other crunches). Then again, I
seldom see McAfee av; I do see norton sometimes, tho.

I think Norton tries too hard, sometimes :-)
