Garbage on Restart After Installation
I'm trying to install 98 on a clean hard drive. The installation goes off
without a hitch, but when it restarts after loading, a bunch of junk characters are thrown up on the monitor from the top down and the computer beeps. This happens until it is shut off. Any ideas, anyone? |

Me again.
I should also mention that I have partitioned and formatted the drive. FAT32. Thanks. "Sue" wrote: I'm trying to install 98 on a clean hard drive. Go into the BIOS setup and make sure boot virus protection is disabled.
Be sure to save any changes when exiting. Then start the computer with=20 a boot floppy and refresh the master boot record and DOS boot sector=20 with the following: fdisk /mbr sys c: Ben "Sue" wrote in message = news Me again. Thanks so much Ben! I'll try that as soon as I get home. Funny...but if I
hit F8 (to go into safe mode) the garbage stops, and then I can hit enter to load Windows (which loads fine). I tried flashing the BIOS thinking that would solve it, but no luck. I've never seen this before! I'll let you know how it goes! "Ben Myers" wrote: Go into the BIOS setup and make sure boot virus protection is disabled. Be sure to save any changes when exiting. I tried what you suggested...unfortunately to no avail. I decided to go onto
other stuff. The modem wasn't recognized, so I pulled it out, got the number, downloaded the drivers, and PRESTO! Garbage gone! I can't even believe it, but it appears that the generic modem driver was the culprit! Thanks for the suggestion though. I had about run out of ideas!
