Invalid Page Fault in msvcrt.dll
While attempting to upgrade McAfee Internet Security Suite from Version 6 to
Version 7, Privacy Service would not install. I consulted the Knowledge Base at McAfeeHelp.com and proceeded to perform a manual full uninstall of McAfee including edits to the registry. Since then I have been getting these annoying Invalid Page Faults in msvcrt.dll. I’ve consulted the Microsoft.com knowledgebase and searched through the Internet and General newsgroups, and have learned a lot. I have purged my system of malware, cleared temp directories, and downloaded libraries of DLL files, but I still get a number of invalid page faults per windows session. Specifically Msnappau (as well as Iexplorer, IE6wzd, Spysub, Mghtml (the McAfee installer), and Msmsgs) cause an invalid page fault in msvcrt.dll at 017f:7800d707. McAfeeHelp chat support tell me it’s not their problem till I get IE 6 installed and working again, but the IE6wzd invalid page faults have me stuck. I thought I had found the fix based on one of the Win98 General Newsgroup postings that tied this type of error to a bad VBScript.dll. I had noticed that the IE6wzd was preparing to install vb scripting support when it generated the invalid page fault. I also noticed that the version of Vbscrip.dll was a later version than the one that comes with IE6 based on the dll DB at Microsoft.com. I also noticed that the size and date of the vbscript.dll file in my windows\system directory was of a different size and date that the one I had backed up earlier in the year (unlike that of msvcrt.dll). I also noticed poor formatting of web pages with an error in the status bar. I could refresh the page to clean it up but sometimes I’d just get the invalid page fault. I copied the backup into the windows\system directory and rebooted, but I still have the same symptoms. Any suggestions? Note that I am running Windows 98 SE and IE 5.5 -- Thanks, Bob |

I've made some progess thanks to some prvious postings on the newsgroup from
all of you. I evidently had a corrupted msvcrt.dll. The version number was 6.10.8637 which was not a valid version according to the MicroSoft.com DLL database. So I restored the version 6.0.8397 from the cabs directory, robooted and was able to obtain updates to spybot (this used to fail due to the invalid page fault) and installed IE 6 SP 1 without an invalid page fault. However, when rebooting after the IE 6 SP1 install, I received an error about a missing ieinfo5.ocx file, then the invalid page faults started again and I cant get IE 6 to access the internet without throwing an error in msvcrt.dll. Well, back to the research. "Bob" wrote: While attempting to upgrade McAfee Internet Security Suite from Version 6 to Version 7, Privacy Service would not install. Oh dear,
ieinfo5.ocx is a file specifically related to the System Information Tool. To confirm, run the following programme (Msinfo32.exe) and see if you can open the branch related to Internet Explorer, or if it exists at all. I think you were on the correct track in replacing msvcrt.dll - I'm betting McAfee replaced the correct version on your system with one of their own (being 6.10.8637). I became very angry when I read your report that McAfee Support were denying any responsibility for this problem. Bloody cheek. I attempted you advice and here are the results:
First I renamed the other 7 or so msvcrt.dll files on the machine (Note that the 6.10 version may have come from a Citrx Client install based on the date of the file) then I uninstalled IE 6, and repaired 5.5 via the System Information Tool (Note that after a reboot and/or other unrecorded fixes the ocx error went away and I am able to see the IE tree in the System information tool) and have it accessing the internet though errors still occur – errors on the status line e.g. javascript:void(0), errors on page the details of which are object expected and cThread undefined, display errors such that the list of languages on the Newsgroup selector pane is not scrollable unless I refresh (when logging into the newgroup), and I still get the occasional Invalid page fault in msvcrt.dll as well as other libraries including stmain, ws2_32, Kernel32 and unknown. I tried http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315496 to take care of the javascript:void(0) error, and IE appears stable, but the javascript:void(0) will appear with a mouse over of any of the three postings on this tread from http://support.microsoft.com/newsgro...oc=NEWSGROUPLN I still can’t upgrade to IE 6 without losing access to the internet. Does the fact I have the machine configured for multiple users affect the implementation of the recommended solutions? Is there a way to completely uninstall IE 5.5 before installing IE 6 if IE 5.5 does not appear under add/remove programs? You may be able to resolve your final problems by reinstalling/updating your
scripting engine. I did load MS Windows Script 5.6 for Win 98 with jscript.dll version
5.6.0.8825. Though I'm not experiencing the invalid page fault in Internet Explorer, the display is still unstable. I need to refresh a page after initial load when scroll bars are missing or the font size appears larger than expected. The refresh seems to correct these issues for that page and that IE session. Any ideas on what may cause the page display issues e.g. font size, missing scroll bars, specifically when transitioning from a secure site (reproduceable), but seems random among other sites? I do have MSN Toolbar. I'll uninstall if I get another IPF in stmain.dll. I did remove cslsp.dll and Mclsp.dll using LSPFix since these were McAfee versions. I have not replaced then since I haven't found the need, unless of course that's what generating the Authenitcation error in Outlook Express, but I'm still able to access e-mails, so I'm not looking to take that on yet. I think you were on the correct track in replacing msvcrt.dll - I'm betting McAfee replaced the correct version on your system with one of their own (being 6.10.8637). I became very angry when I read your report that McAfee Support were denying any responsibility for this problem. Bloody cheek. I’ve consulted the Microsoft.com knowledgebase and searched through the Internet and General newsgroups, and have learned a lot. I have purged my system of malware, cleared temp directories, and downloaded libraries of DLL files, but I still get a number of invalid page faults per windows session. Note that I am running Windows 98 SE and IE 5.5 -- Thanks, BobY |

I think I'm all set now. I dropped the HW Acceleration as you suggested.
That didn't seem to matter much. A friend stopped by and saw that I had all the anti-spyware running and suggested I disable it. I did that and IE 6 SP 1 installed fine and I no longer see the page errors during web page loads. I'm currently running through all the Windows updates, then should be back to where I was before this nightmare started. Then I'll try the McAffee install again. Thanks for all your help Sandi.
