Question on Device Manager settings
I am having problems with my scanner. I get the "system
cannot communicate with scanner" error. I don't know much about SCSI ports but when I look at Control Panel/System/Device Manager, under SCSI there are two listed as "HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter". One says the "device is working properly" and the other says it's "not available". I'm wondering why there are two entries. Since I don't know what I'm doing here I don't want to remove anything. I recently had to reinstall Windows 98 SE and that is when this problem started. I have tried the obvious solutions of uninstalling and reinstalling the scanner software. All cables are secure. Everything worked fine before the Windows reinstall. |

Question on Device Manager settings
I would start up and press the F8 key before Windows loads
to bring up the boot menu. Choose the Safe mode option. Enter the Device Manager as usual and remove the scanner entries and allow Windows to reinstall the drivers. Have the driver CD handy in case Windows asks for it. See this page for information on clearing the Device Manager of duplicate entries in Safe mode: http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/Image2.htm Eric, http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ -----Original Message----- I am having problems with my scanner. Question on Device Manager settings
I gather from your answer that there is no question that
both entries are for the scanner? I just don't want to remove anything I need. I had SO much trouble with this computer a few weeks ago that I'm really gun shy. -----Original Message----- I would start up and press the F8 key before Windows loads to bring up the boot menu. Question on Device Manager settings
Sorry - me again.
Are the "HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter" entries under the SCSI Controllers definitely for the scanner? Can't be for the hard drive, right? -----Original Message----- I would start up and press the F8 key before Windows loads to bring up the boot menu. Choose the Safe mode option. I'm a little out of my depth here, but I'll try to help you in the hope, believe it or not, that what I say will make more sense to you than it does to me. EPST is a protocol module for the Shuttle EPST adapter (also known as the Adaptec APA-1350). This is the adapter used in various HP and SyQuest devices. I believe it is used to adapt the parallel port for use in connecting to SCSI devices. That is your "device (that) is working properly". The other side of that coin is that it disables the parallel port. Hence, your "not available" message. You seem to have got things in a knot by reinstalling Windows. What to do? 1 Uninstall any HP scanner software and reboot 2 In Device Manager, remove both of the entries under SCSI. 3 In the WINDOWS folder, backup any files that start with TWAIN or TWUNK, and then delete them 4 Reboot and press DEL (or F1) to start the BIOS Setup program 5 Look around (maybe in Peripheral Configuration) and make sure that the "Parallel Port:" is set to Auto or Enabled. I'm not sure if you need to set to ECP or EPP. You may have to try them both, one at a time. 6 Save the CMOS changes and continue booting 7 Reload the scanner software |

Question on Device Manager settings
Hugh,
Question: if it disabled the parellel port then why does my printer work? It is attached to the pass through port on the scanner. -----Original Message----- Jane B wrote in message ... The HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter is driving it? As I indicated, I was trying to figure out a logical explanation, but I stated to you up front that I wasn't claiming expertise here. -----Original Message----- Jane B wrote in message ...
