Is it possible to update my Win98se CD with all available updates & IE6?
I know it can be done with Win2K & XP, what about Win9x OS's?

Your Win98SE system CD is RO = Read Only (as are 99 per
cent of all CDs) i.e. cannot be updated.

You can't add the data to your existing Windows 98 CD. Can't with Windows 2K
or XP, either. If you want to have a collection of updates to apply to
Windows after installing, you can do it with one or two additional CDs.

I think what you're thinking about is an admin install CD, one that you
create, in which you can add the setup files and update files using a
process known as "slipstreaming". It is not an easy procedure, and I don't
know where you would find the instructions. While I believe a similar
procedure exists for Windows 9x, I don't believe it is as straight-forward
as that for Win2K/XP, nor do I think it would be worth it unless you're
creating an install CD to use on a LOT of machines that you want to be
identical. Easier solution is to install and update one machine, then image
it to install to other machines.

Hi Gary,

I don't think W98 supports slipstreaming. Seems to me that W2K was the
first OS to support it.

Right. The common slipstreaming software for XP is autostreamer. Requires
the original installation CD (not a restore version), and the newer service
pack. Combines the 2, and make an ISO for CD burning out of it. Used as an
original installation CD.

There's ways of incorporating the windows updates for XP into the
installation, but won't go there. Not appropriate here.

That's what I thought, but I vaguely recalled something about automating
Win9x Updates. Something entirely different, even if it exists.

I'm also pretty sure that win2k was the first (MS) OS to support
slip-streaming.

There is an *unofficial* service pack for win98 that I've tried and it
contains maybe half of the critical updates.

It will work even if IE6 is not installed ...but I'd advise installing IE6
first.

Gary,

If I recall correct (but I hope, my amnesia serves me still), there was
an article in MS KB, where it is described how to perform an unattended
installation of all Win98 updates -- using something like RunOnce
procedure (for the subsequent update(s)), that is implementing in the
Registry when the current update is finished and system prepares to
reboot.

All the updated must be downloaded already -- usually via
v4 Windows Update Catalog,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...llowv4cat=true

Not interested in a KB search for *that* item, s. Only really useful to
people with lots of 98 machines to update, and how many situations like that
are still extant?
