Clean Install
I am trying to install Windows 98 on a hard drive that I have wiped clean and
reformatted. I'm confident that the partition and format was done properly as it brought me up to the point of entering the 11 letter label. My problem is when I type the command for setup this is what is displayed; "Please wait while setup initializes. Windows setup requires 'largest executable program size' to be at least 442368 bytes to run." It then returns to the prompt. I have a sneaky suspicion that the 98 CD that I bought online from Pronetcd is not an operating system disk. Does anyone know how I can check it to be sure? Any help at all will be appreciated. |

Open the case and remove and reseat the memory modules. If this doesn't
help, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289727 Ben "woodbndr" wrote in message ... I am trying to install Windows 98 on a hard drive that I have wiped clean and reformatted. Thanks that got me a little farther down the road by using the /im switch..
I got it to go on and tell me it was going to do some checking on my computer and then said "Setup cannot find SCANDISK.EXE. The file may be damaged or missing." Maybe another indicator I have a bad CD? "Ben Myers" wrote: Open the case and remove and reseat the memory modules. Try copying the setup files to your HD. Use the following commands after
booting to the floppy boot disk. Assumes you only have one HD partition and that the CD drive ends up being E:\ sys c: md c:\win98 copy e:\win98\*.* c:\win98 When the copying finishes, reboot the machine after removing the floppy disk. At the C:\ prompt: cd win98 setup /? Depending on the version, different switches are available. I disable all the optional stuff like scandisk, setup disk, billboards, etc. -- Gary S. Any help at all will be appreciated. Assuming it is a genuine Microsoft product, it should have a part number on it somewhere - from memory, these are about nine or ten characters long, sometimes all digits, sometimes the odd letter. Publish that, and someone surely will be able to tell you. (I don't have a list to hand I'm afraid.) |

woodbndr isn't likely to read your message, since the last post was three
weeks ago and s/he hasn't returned. That very fact suggests that the problem was resolved, though it is nice to get follow-up/feedback, eh? Do you have a similar problem, or are you just curious, s? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "***** charles" wrote in message t... Did you ever get it installed? |
