Default Problem Adding Memory

I recently purchased 128 megs more of ram from the local
Fry's. I installed it in the slot and nothing happened.
The computer does not recognize that there is another 128
megs of ram. It is still only using the original 128. Is
there anything I can do to make it recognize the other 128
that I added? Thanks in advance.

How much memory does the bios say you have installed when you first switch on
your PC? This should be displayed on the text screen immediately after
switching on and before booting into your operating system.

It says 128 during start up. When I go to the
settings/control panel/system
on both the general and the performance tabs, it says 127.0
I have recently been getting those "There's not enough
free memory to run this program" messages too.

If the bios only reports 128MB of memory then either your new memory is of an
incorrect type or not seated correctly on the motherboard. Win Me will only
ever be able to see whatever the bios can see.

Don't worry that System | General only shows 127MB rather than 128MB - this is
quite normal and can happen for a number of reasons, one being where system
memory is shared with an on-board graphics adapter.

The error message "There's not enough free memory to run this program" is not
necessarily related to the amount of installed memory unless you have for some
reason chosen to limit Win Me's Virtual Memory. Often "not enough free
memory" really means not enough free resources, at other times when using Word
it is the result of a corrupt template file (normal.dot).

There is all kinds of RAM out there. not only does the

new ram stick have to be compatible with the other ram
stick...it also need to be with the motherboard. If you
know how to move around your cmos you can check to see if
the motherboard even sees it...if not then the mb doesn't
like it..* if you pull out your old ram and just put the
new stick in ...making sure the new ram even works...hope
this helped ....Ro PS. better to get sister chips is
truely the best. There should be a s/n tab on the
ram ..you can see if you can search the interent...on how
to identify the company name or country for that
matter ..chuckling...Best to you*
