ok guys. here goes.

msi RS480M2-IL mother board
1gig ram
amd 64 3800+
maxtor SATA 300gb 6B300S0 hard drive.

when i first put this computer together from scratch, the brand new
hard drive loaded windows mce 2005 perfectlly. right out of the bag
it caught the 300gb and formatted, used the computer flawlessly for 3
weeks, then decided
i didn't want mce2005 so i blew away partition and decided to install
xp pro . ever since then, i have been unable to install xp with
anything larger than 137gb.. ive installed it, then installed the
registry fix for windows for large drive support. no luck. i did
DISKPART and it found the unallocated space, but i can't extend the
space to the current volume partition. i want to have 1 300gb c:
drive, not multiple partitions.

went to maxtor site, downloaded maxblast 4 and followed instructions.
booted from floppy - it formatted the drive and partitioned it ntsf
as 300gb said all was well and to reboot with xp pro cd in the drive.
i did it, and still
xp pro cd only sees the drive as 137gb..

do i have to install with a xp pro SP1 disc, for it to recognize it in
the setup as one huge 300gb partition, or can i install with xp pro
(no service pack) and then upgrade it to sp2 after im in windows?

bios finds the drive as 300gb auto detect no problem.. im out of
ideas.

snip

This is ME not MCE for the record. As you said the BIOS sees it, installl
SP2 (IIRC) to see the additional drive space and format it.

48 bit LBA support was introduced with XP SP1 and W2K SP3.

Most excellent. I'm glad someone remembers these things. The sad thing is by
the time someone comes around with a question on this again I will have
forgotten which service pack addressed the LBA issue. Now it makes me
curious. (I always partition various drives as a general rule.) What do ME
users who want it to be a single non-partitioned drive need to do beyond
updating BIOS if applicable? I took a look he
http://www.48bitlba.com/win98.htm I didn't see a "fix" for it there really,
only the idea of just partitioning it.

One can buy 'High Capacity Disk Patch" from Rudolph R. Loew:
http://members.aol.com/rloew1/Programs/Patch137.htm

(This patch updates ESDI_506.PDR)

Interesting and thank you. I can't, for the life of me, imagine paying for
something such as this. I'd sooner partition personally though it does
answer my qeustion as to "how" one manages to do this. I suppose with FATxx
and the inherant file size limitations there's no real concern about using
the entire drive either way. My current thought process is on the lines of
creating an ME box that is at maximum capacity, an idea that stems from
trying to get ME to run on a 64 bit AMD. (No, I don't have a good reason for
any of this, just the reason that it's something to do...) Thanks again,
I'll take a look at the demo, see what it does, and think about other
alternative methods.

Yep, it's a great challenge to install old Windows OS-es on new PC-s.
Currently I limit myself to WIndows 98SE (dual boot with XP.SP2),
max 512 MB RAM and max 120 GB HDD PATA.

Regarding alternatives, there is quite an activity on MSFN forum from
a group of people (gape, MDMx, Tihiy, Maximus-Decim, ...) who are
trying to enhance old Windows (like general USB Mass Storage support
in Windows 98SE). Here is a new thread (2005-MAY-22) about
ESDI_506.PDR (it seems they plan to develop free 137GB solution):

(There are also couple of messages from author of commercial patch...)

Hi,

Snipped out good stuffs just to say hello.

Once again thank you. Over the years I've traveled throughout the 'net and
the domain layout (and some authors there) are familiar but that site was
not in my favorites. While I admit the content is currently above my level
(I have not slept in a day and a half or so but I am GOING to get VPC
figured out even if it kill me) the link you gave me reeks of geek content
seldom found these days. Since the invasion of the body-snatchers I'm not
sure where the deep technical tidbits of otherwise worthless information
(face it, who really really really needs 48 bit LBA on 9x when partitioning
makes more sense) that used to abound. This site was, as I mentioned, not in
my favorites and it is now. I can imagine that I'll waste many hours (are
they really wasted?) there and hopefully learn a thing or two.

Regards, Roman

Of all the silly things this has done is it has given me further cause to
figuring out a decent, acceptably filtered, method of creating a shared
favorites folder. I think, perhaps, a box setup with the many sites I've
collected, asking donations from other people who'd like to contribute,
filtering them somehow, and then using the export feature of IE might do the
trick. It sounds like a bit of work but it has it's merits... Something to
think about adding to the site though for something like that I'd want a
dedicated box. (Hardware is not an issue for something like that. I'd just
not want it to be confused with my own mishmash of favorites) Ah well...
See? Now you've given me two good sites and an additional reason to mull
that same silly idea over again.

Regards to you too.
