Default Need to repair windows 98SE

I am running windows 98SE. I have lost my volume control panel and the
computer in general is working crazy. Can I put the windows 98
installer CD in and have it replace or place things back in order
without having to reinstall all my drivers and programs. In other
words is there a way to clean and repair problems without having to
redo the whole hard drive? Is there a utility in windows I could try
to run and hopefully fix things?

You have to provide a whole lot of better details then it is working crazy.
With specific information, perhaps we can help you. The sound problem is
probably fixable but we really need to know everything that is going on.

What you are asking about is an over-the-top installation of W98 and it
generally does not fix anything--problems get worse. This installation can
be used to get the system working well enough to recover files that are not
backed up but that is generally it.

If you do decide you need to reinstall the system, bite the bullet and
install it clean and reinstall your software. For information on installing
W98, go to: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html

Hi Ron,
The OP has multiposted rather than crossposting, and has an identical post in
win98.setup, with a similar response to yours by MVP Gary Terhune. The latest reply
by the OP sounds like there is a malware problem, to me.

Well for starters my volume control is gone from my system tray. And
a
search for sndvol32.exe shows it is gone when I do a find for it.
I am trying to install AOL 9 and it tells me it can't because
acsd.exe
is not found or is aolacsd.exe either. My AOL 7 already installed
keeps starting up without me initiating it.

Check in the 'Add/Remove Programs' Control Panel:
Windows Setup:Multimedia:Volume Control

See if that have been unchecked for some reason. Even if not, try unchecking
it and ok your way out, reboot, go back and recheck 'Volume Control' again.
That should reinstall [sndvol32.exe] and its helpfile.

I have no idea about AOL software.

Fantastic!! Thanks a bunch that brought it back without even putting
in the windows install disc. Any idea why it vanished? I did not
uncheck it under the above mentioned control panel? It still is not in
my system tray as I write this but have not restarted yet. If it does
not appear is there a way to get it back in the system tray? Thank you
all for your great help!
Now I need to see what is up with AOL is there an AOL news group here?

Um, I'm guessing that you meant to respond to "...et al." as he is the one who gave
specific directions for reinstating the volume control.

your AOL issues, you stated that AOL 9 won't install and AOL 7 keeps starting
without your input. The first things I would do are to 1) check your system for
viruses, trojans, adware, and spyware; and 2) totally uninstall all versions of AOL
via Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, and start from scratch with an install of
the version you want.

I meant to have said that. That you might have to insert your Windows CD. ;-)

Nope.

The Audio-tab in the 'Multimedia' Control Panel applet has a checkbox to
toggle the showing of the 'volume control' in the system-tray (taskbar).

Now I need to see what is up with AOL is there an AOL news group here?

My news-service-provider carries several hundreds 'aol.*' and a few
'alt.aol.*' groups, but i know nothing about them.
