Default AVI and WMV

I've been ordering DVDs lately and have no trouble playing
mpg and mpeg short preview clips. Nothing over 1 or 2 mb.
However avi and wmv won't open. An error message will pop-up
asking if I want to search for correct codex online. I click yes
but it only takes to mostly pay sites with LARGE downloads.

I have wmp9, wmp_classic 6.4 and the Not MS mpc.

Planning on d/l VLC later as it was suggested as a replacement.

Anyone have a MS link I could try. Since I'm running
Win, I'd like to stay within them if I can.

Win 98 SE, P166 mmx, on dial-up.

Use google.com to locate codecs--I got all I needed for free.
Unfortunately, it was quite some time ago and I don't recall where I got
them from.
