Running Scandisk in DOS mode is always a good idea *if* you discover
problems after runninig it in Normal Windows Mode or some event during Startup produces error messages. What's *always* true with Scandisk is that you want to never have it automatically fix anything. You always want to fully investigate any problems that it flags before telling it to fix. Some errors are common and no problem (free space reporting, for instance.) With others, if yo uallow Scandisk to "fix", you may be doing more harm than good. If you allow it to automatically fix, it could quickly turn a minor problem into a major one, like scrambling ALL of your data trying to fix an unfixable problem with the physical drive. Note to readers: Find Scandisk.ini and change all settings that have it automatically repairing anything to Prompt. Scandisk.ini contains the settings used by Scandisk when it automatically runs during startup after some error or a "bad shutdown". -- Gary S. defrag won't work
Something went wrong for me. I downloaded it to my desktop after closing running
programs with ctrl-alt-delete. I opened it with WinZip to my desktop. I then followed your instructions and re-named defrag.exe to defrag.exeOLD. I then dragged the opened one from my desktop to Windows. It did not ask me anything, but it did not install it next to defrag.exeOLD. Instead, it put it at the very end of the list. After I closed windows and re-booted and then looked for it in Windows.....it had disappeared. Now when I go to run \Windows and press F2 it renames Aim95 DEFR. I have changed my defrag.exeOLD back to defrag.exe and deleted everything that I downloaded. Any suggestions from here. (Also at one point I got a message that the download was corrupt when I was trying to put it back into Windows the second time.) "kimbo_" wrote in message ... defrag won't work
I was able to defrag from safe mode after doing a scandisk from DOS... after moving
the APLOG folder somewhere. Now I have to find the APLOG folder to replace it. Can you tell me how to do that? But my SCANDISK AND DEFRAG STILL DON'T WORK. SO DO I HAVE TO DO THIS ANYTIME I WANT TO DEFRAG? IT SEEMS THAT IS LIKE TAKING AN ASPERIN. THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM. Any other suggestions? "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS WITH DISK DEFRAGMENTER 1. Apply one recommendation at a time and then try Defrag again to see if it helped. 2. Disable the screensaver, anti virus program and the cable/DSL modem, if any. 3. Delete the files in the Recycle Bin, the browser cache (Temporary Internet Files folder if using MSIE) and the Temp, History and Recent folders. Corrupt files can cause Defrag problems. 4. You may receive a notice indicating the drive was written to and caused Defrag to restart. This means some process is causing hard drive activity which interferes with Defrag. Either reboot to safe mode and run Defrag from there or use EndItAll2, a free program which shuts down nearly all running programs except Explorer and Systray. Download the program from he http://www.docsdownloads.com/Tier1/enditall.htm To boot to safe mode in W98, see: http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q180/9/02.asp 5. It's possible corrupt files in the Cookies and Applog folders will cause Defrag problems. Since those files contain useful information, you can either move them to a partition other than the one being Defragged or to floppy disks. Once Defrag is complete, you can replace the files. If it appears either folder contains corrupt files, you will either have to try to determine which files are corrupt, delete all the files and let them rebuild as part of your normal operations or move the folders during the next Defrag session. If you run into problems deleting a file because it is corrupt, try deleting it from a DOS prompt. 6. The first Defrag after installing or upgrading to Win98 may take a significant amount of time to complete. Also, Defrag may appear to stall out at the 10% mark; however, this is a common occurrence. As long as there is disk activity, let Defrag run. The appearance of stalling with W95 may also occur but it will generally be before 10%. 7.
