How to uninstall Windows 98 safely
Hi,
I want to uninstall Original release of Windows 98 (Windows 98 4.10.1998) from my Toshiba 4020CDT notebook and re-install Windows 98 Second edition (Windows 98 4.10.2222A). The procedures I found on internet about uninstalling Windows 98 were similar to below http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186102/EN-US/ http://www.windowsreinstall.com/arti...euninstall.htm Unfortunately, I couldn't find "Uninstall Windows 98" setting from my current Windows 98 installation. Please suggest how could I proceed with uninstallation ? I couldn't find any corresponding help from Toshiba bulletins http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...ceghdgngdgnj.0 Hope somebody could help |

This will preserve your installed applications and user data files. #2: If your Windows 98 SE is an OEM version then it cannot be installed as an upgrade. You will need to follow these steps (or equivalent): a: Back up all of your user data files to CDs, a network drive, or some other removable medium. Validate these backups to ensure that they can be restored later. b: Make certain you have both the installation CD and the Product Key for the Windows 98 SE you want to install. c: Make certain you have the installation CDs and license codes/product keys for all of the application programs you want to have on the computer for use with Windows 98 SE d: Boot your computer with a Windows 98 startup disk (www.bootdisk.com if you don't have one) and at the A:\ enter the following command: FORMAT C: That will wipe out everything repeat everything on the hard drive, leaving it clean and empty and ready to install Windows 98 SE e: Boot your computer with the Windows 98 SE CD and install Windows 98 SE. f: Visit the Windows Update site and get all of the critical updates for Windows 98 SE g: Visit the Toshiba website and get all of the driver updates for Windows 98 SE on the model 4020CDT. h: Install your application programs, including antivirus and antispyware. i: Restore your user data files from the backups you made in step a: Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C. How to uninstall Windows 98 safely
snip
1. After the computer is clean, I like to install Windows 98SE first. 2. Next, I will use the cd for the graphics driver so I will not be exposed to anything on the Internet before my security is fully up and running. 3. Then I run the Feb. 2004 Windows Security cd since it must be in 800x600 resolution then step 2 must come first. 4. I make sure I have a firewall enabled then download Windows Updates -- first critical ones of course 5. Then download other important things from safe sites like Majorgeeks that I use like Adaware SE, Anti virus program like AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, HiJack This, CWShredder, etc. 6. Install programs 7. Implement Multi-Layered Security Strategy |

You will need to follow these steps (or equivalent): a: Back up all of your user data files to CDs, a network drive, or some other removable medium. All useful data copied away using PCAnywhere or floppies. b: Make certain you have both the installation CD and the Product Key for the Windows 98 SE you want to install. Actually my Windows 98 should be Original release of Windows 98 cos it was shown as "Windows 98 4.10.1998" under My computer tab. c: Make certain you have the installation CDs and license codes/product keys for all of the application programs you want to have on the computer for use with Windows 98 SE In fact I intend to replace Windows 98 by Windows 98 second edition. d: Boot your computer with a Windows 98 startup disk (www.bootdisk.com if you don't have one) and at the A:\ enter the following command: FORMAT C: I don't want to format c: if there is other solution cos Toshiba staff may had installed some Toshiba drivers or small applications in my notebook (I found one big hidden file named Toshiba.dat at c:\). I'm afraid formatting c: will delete some essential files. That will wipe out everything repeat everything on the hard drive, leaving it clean and empty and ready to install Windows 98 SE e: Boot your computer with the Windows 98 SE CD and install Windows 98 SE. f: Visit the Windows Update site and get all of the critical updates for Windows 98 SE g: Visit the Toshiba website and get all of the driver updates for Windows 98 SE on the model 4020CDT. h: Install your application programs, including antivirus and antispyware. i: Restore your user data files from the backups you made in step a: Instead of adopting your suggestion. I tried one "dirty" method. 1. I have one bootable ME CD. Also, by running TSETUP.EXE (Toshiba supplied BIOS configuration utility), I found the notebook allows booting from CD-ROM. 2. I changed BIOS setting to boot from this ME CD. I choosed to boot to DOS mode. Then I use deltree to delete C:\WINDOWS & C:\PROGRAM FILES. 3. I also wanted to delete those system files left in C:\ but failed cos I couldn't remove the system & hidden attributes from them. So I left them there. 4. I ran setup (ME installation program) from CD-ROM. Luckily, installation went on smooth until I met one error message "KBC ERROR" ME installation almost completed (the error was Toshiba generated error). I ignored it by pressing RESET button. 5. ME installation went to completion, so far nothing found abnormal. I thought I was fortunately because I could force a newer version of Windows installation without need to clear all old version Windows 98 files left. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Does any software you mentioned software own similar functions as Norton Internet Security ? If so, do they perform better ? 6. Install programs 7. Implement Multi-Layered Security Strategy |

Implement Multi-Layered Security Strategy I feel Norton uses too many system resources. The Ethernet Cable is not plugged into my computer when I install Windows. The graphics driver is needed for the security cd since it requires 800x600 or better. |
