Default system shutsdown shortly after startup

My husbands laptop is giving me fits. If I start the system is DOS or go
into startup, the system will stay on. But within 1 minute of going into
Windows after startup the laptop will shutdown (hiberation mode) and will not
start back up for me. I have to manually powerdown the computer. This has
been going on for some time.

I even rebooted the system and re-enstalled Windows98 thinking that would
solve the problem and it has not.

Anyone have a suggestion? Oh btw, it is Win98, Sony Vaio.

ok, update time. Got into safe mode and this poped up.

SBS.DRV cannot load because VSBS.386 is not available. Check your SYSTEM.INI

Ok update time. I managed to get into the safe mode and this popped up on
the screen.

SBS.DRV cannot load because VSBS.386 is not available. Check your
SYSTEM.INI Windows configuration file.

Well I found the VSBS.386 file under c:\Program files\Battery Scope. Does
it need to be in the SYSTEM.INI file or what. Going to try and see what
happens. Let you know what happens.

Sony Vaio--What model?

Battery Scope is a Sony laptop device that keep tabs on your battery health.
Suggests that Battery Scope needs to be reinstalled. On the other hand, errors
like this one make me wonder about malware--viruses in particular. Yes, you have
a copy of VSBS.386 in the Battery Scope folder, but that's not where drivers are
typically located once they've been installed. It's also obviously not where the
system is looking for it. So, what happened to the one that should be in the
Windows folder somewhere?

You can use MSCONFIG in Safe Mode to look for commands to load the Battery Scope
and disable them. Should let you back into Normal mode where you can further
diagnose possible infections, and/or reinstall Battery Scope.
