How is your external hard drive connected? Firewire? USB? Also how
large is the drive?

Is that a whole new portable hard drive, or a hard drive enclosed in
an external enclosure ( http://www.removable-storage-guide.com )?

If it is a portable hard drive, then you would have to check the
driver from the manufacturer. But if you are using Windows XP, then
there's must be something wrong with your external hard drive, because
Windows XP doesn't require any additional driver.

As for external enclosure, an internal hard drive must first be
formatted in FAT32 mode. Many have reported that if it is not
formatted in this mode, the OS couldn't detect it.

I was reading the original post again and again at first, but couldn't
actually figured out the sentence. You pointed me out! :P Thanks for
the note!

So, if you are using Windows ME, have you tried the portable hard
drive in your friend's computer? If that works, then it's your OS
problem, but if it doesn't too, try it on other operating systems like
XP, 98, 2000, Mac and so on. If all fail, well, we can come to a
conclusion that your drive is faulty.
