Default Removing icons

I have uninstalled several programs, but I cannot figure
out how to take the icons of the screen (i.e. I
uninstalled aol 6.0, but the icon is showing retry aol
6.0).
Please help me. I've read my owner's manuals again, but
I'm missing it somewhere.
Thank you so much for your help!
