.PLS vs. WMA: Detailed VErsion
James:
Thanks so much for trying to put me on the right track with respect to solving the mysterious problem, revisited below, regarding .PLS vs. WMA. I still haven't been able to get to the bottom of why the file I download from the RENSE.COM listening page, which should invoke your live audio stream, comes up as an unusable .PLS file on my Win98 desktop instead of as .WMA. Likewise, I haven't been able to figure out how to access or reset my "helper apps" in Internet Explorer 6 or in Windows Media Player 9.0. Can you tell me how to navigate to where this preference is set? It doesn't appear as part of IE's Internet Options. I'm copying a Windows 98 multimedia newsgroup on this message thread to see if anyone else has ideas, just in case your main area of expertise is Netscape. I appreciate your help on this, as well as certain other issues I've faced in the past. ----- Original Message ----- Date: 8/22/2005 21:33:45 -0500 From: "KANE BROLIN" To: "Rense Radio1" Subject: Need a Special Plugin? All headers This is a Hi. I'm a fairly new subscriber to Rense Radio, and have found that I cannot receive the live stream ever since you reorganized your site. I notice that when I click either the 16-bit or the 32-bit live stream, my browser attempts to open or save this and identifies it as a .PLS file. Regardless of whether I open immediately or save the LISTEN file first, Windows Media Player will not run it. Do I need a special plugin? Incidentally, I seem to have no problem receiving (streamed) archives from the same site. Thanks, ------------------------------ From: "James Neff" To: Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 7:51 AM Subject: rense help Hi Kane yeah, what's happening is your browsers internal "helper application" settings are on .pls. You need to change it to .wma and assign windows media player as the player for the .wma file. You do this in the options/prefs of your browser under helper apps. Some browsers just aren't preset for .wma. Netscape especially. If it asks you for really specific info, use the info below file types: audio/x-ms-wma -- new type to type into window you should see some buttons on the right for New Type and Edit, etc remove pls if you see it there in that window. |
