It's likely you have an OEM full version of win98 SE - designed to be
installed on computers without operating systems.
There is an updates CD available that will install from within windows and
do what you want, check for one on Ebay locally as they are no longer
available from MS.

It would help if you provide the exact message; however, I will take a guess
that it is an OEM disk. If so: Information on upgrading with an OEM CD:

Richard,

More information would help. What is the exact message? There are
different types of installation disks.

. . . Information on upgrading with an OEM CD:

This looks v. helpful and steps 3 and 4 are well
worth a try.

My task is to move from the old Win98 P2 to the new
Win98SE P4 many apps, some patched in complex ways
(e.g. Borland Paradox 7, MS Office 2000.) Will this work?

1. FDISK and FORMAT new hard drive in new P4.
2. In old PC, uninstal Media Player (Badour #3)
3. Connect old PC drive as slave in new P4 and
XXCOPY all old C:\*.* to new P4 hard drive (6 or 8 Gb)
4. In new P4 In DOS, do Badour #4 (renaming
C:\Windows\WIN.COM & WINVER.EXE)
5. Reboot with Win98SE install floppy and CD and
SETUP (to C:\Windows, not c:\windows.000.)

My hope is that the instal process will pick up the
old Registry (as well as all 584 EXEs in the old
PC's c:\Program Files) -- so I shall not need to reinstal
major apps from their CDs (all stored safely) and then
patch them again.

(Before this?) the OS installation ought to spot and
request hardware drivers for video card, monitor, trackball etc.

I should then run the MS Windows Security Update CD
(Feb. 2004)
and then instal (new) Fix-It Utilities from its CD (and
update it on line): this is my usual Registry tool (and
its PowerDesk module is much better than EXPLORER).

Comments?
