DMA Access

I have recently installed a 40Gig Western Digital Hard drive as a slave to
my 6g HDD on my W98 machine. I have transferred the virtual memory to this
faster slave. I have tried to enable DMA via the systems/device
manager/properties DMA tick box but it will not stick. On rebooting the DMA
tick box is unticked.

I notice there is a device called 'Direct memory access controller' which I
think is something to do with this. It asks me a couple of questions which I
dont know the answer to.

What do I do?

Do you have UDMA enabled (or set to Auto) for the Primary IDE Controller, in the
BIOS?

Having an older drive (which may not support the use of DMA) as the master on that
channel may be the reason for the problem. Try the new drive a master on the
Secondary channel, rather than putting it on the same channel/cable as the older 6GB
drive.

There are two boxes, both unticked: Reserve DMA Buffer? & Address
Restrictions?

The Primary IDE Controller is set to Auto in the BIOS.

The original HDD did support DMA and box was ticked. It has now become
unticked and will not remain ticked.

There is also a reference to DMA on the starting screen. It says ' DMA is at
TDMA' or similar.

How do I carry out such operation?

I am wondering whether I put the wrong end of the new Data Cable on the
second drive. In re-reading the instruction manual it says the end plug
should go on the primary and middle plug goes on the secondary drive. I am
not 100% sure I did this.

If I have done this could this cause the problem?

Yes, I hope by now you have opened the case and checked that you have the cable
installed correctly. I assume you are using a 40-pin, 80-wire cable with different
color connectors for the motherboard, master, and slave connections.
