Default Cannot access port problem

A customer upgraded their machine from Windows 95 to Windows 98.
When they try to print a test page on their printer, they get the
message: There was an error writing to LPT1. Cannot access the port. It
may be in use by another program.

It worked fine in 95. Can't see where another program would be
trying to print to this printer. It is not shared nor is the computer
part of a network.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is the printer and what port is it using? Have you checked with the
manufacturer for W98 drivers for the printer? Does the port appear properly
in Device Manager? Can you test the port with a different device?
