Default autodialer driving me nuts

Running an Acer laptop, PII, 6 gig HD, 4 gig free, 128 RAM. I've got
S&D, AVG, and Adaware that I run frequently with usually miminal to no
problems. Box generally runs fine for what I need and do. Internet
connection is dialup (DSL not in my area yet) but I can live with it for
now.
Current problem is that after d'loading Firefox to try for a browser,
my ISP connection box pops up all the time when I open up Firefox even if I
want to work offline. Used to only happen to IE6 twice after opening IE6.
I'd click out twice and then a box would pop up that said the server could
not be reached. After that nothing would pop up unless I opened up another
instance of either IE6 or OE to read some newsgroups offline.
Now if I open up Firefox (offline) the damn ISP connection box just
keeps popping up relentlessly countless times.
I've got the box checked in IE6 to "never dial a connection" but it
keeps resetting itself to "dial whenever a network connection is not
present".
I suspect a reg setting somewhere but can't find it for the life of
me.
As far as I can see, Firefox doesn't have such an option.

Will try that. I did see somewhere in the options menu that by default ,
check for updates for firefox was enabled. I've disabled it and will see if
this helps too.

That is what fixed it when I had the same behaviour from Firefox.

Unchecking the option to update Firefox automatically seems to have
helped in this respect.
