Default help - new soundcard not working

x-no-archive: yes
Installed Creative Ensoniq s/card in son's pc, all I can get is
humming/buzzing through (line-out) to stereo system.

Was second-hand, but downlowaded Ensoniq driver from creative wensite, but
doesnt sem to fix it.

Pardon my ignorance, but can anyone help? Is there like a windows98se
standard soundcard driver that should work with it?

TIA

Repost with your check list of things done:
1. Sound card is seated solidly in place.
2. Correct drivers for this PC's OS and this model
of sound card have been installed. PC Control Panel
reports the sound card as working OK.
3. Connectors on the back panel have been
correctly installed. (They are nowadays often
colour coded.)
3b. This pattern of connection to the hi-fi system
has worked OK between the same hi-fi and a different PC.
4. What audio diagnostic software have you run
(e.g. DirectX) ?

Do you get sound connecting to speakers?

Are you connecting to CD, Aux input or tape?

If you only have a stereo output and not 2 RCA outputs, are you using a splitter
cable?

What is the name/type/model of the sound card?
