Default Win 98 will not boot

I have been working on my friends Compaq Presario 5712, which is dead in the
water. I am unable to boot it in normal or safe mode. I receive to error
messages, one is a security message and the other is a explorer message. The
ezplorer message = "This program has performed an illegal operation and will
be shut down. If the problem persist, contact the program vendor."
Details = "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at
015f:00401f31" followed by Registers and code.
The security message = A fatal error in IE occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD
VMM01 + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c.

I've tried reinstalling the OS, so I can at least remove the virus but I get
an upgrade error meassage during the process. I've tried going back to a
known good date, but the restore fails. All I need to do is get the files
from "My Documents". Any ideas. I've already tried these articles from MS:
293174 and 225252.

Thanks

If all you need to do is get the files from My Documents, then boot to a DOS
boot floppy and copy the files to floppy. You will lose long file names, but
they can be renamed properly when you restore them to a Windows system.

Get a utility for creating a DOS boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com.

What version of Windows are you running?

It may be possible to manually delete some of the virus files, at
least enough to get you running in Safe Mode and then we can fix the
registry etc.

Your comment about "I've tried going back to a known good date, but
the restore fails." makes me suspect that you may not be running
Windows 98 and in that case the detailed instructions for fixing this
will be different.

Good luck

It is win98. Most of the data I'm trying to save is art work, so jpegs, etc.

Thanks,

The procedure I suggested would probably have created a file that could
be used to copy the jpegs to a floppy. The idea is to use the DOS =
"copy"
command. For example, if you think "target~1.jpg" is one of the files =
you=20
are trying to restore, insert a floppy disk and use the following =
command line.

copy c:\mydocu~1\mypict~1\target~1.jpg a:\

Thanks. That is the way I went. I had to use the zip drive for the bigger
files (26MB), but I got everything off that was important, and I restored the
OS last night. It is now running very smoothly. Thank you all for your
helpful information.
